Oregon university to build research center in Port St Lucie, FL

PORT ST. LUCIE — Oregon Health & Science University’s Vaccine and Gene Therapy Institute is joining a growing life sciences hub in Tradition.

The institute says it will expand into a research center to be built next door to Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies.

The institute will hire 200 workers over the next decade, according to a news release. Institute scientists will study infectious diseases of the elderly, AIDS and other infectious diseases and viruses. Institute director Jay Nelson will hire employees who will work in the Torrey Pines headquarters until their center is completed.

Oregon Health & Science University is a public, academic health center based in Portland, Ore. It educates health professionals and scientists, conducts research in health and biomedical sciences and advocates programs that improve the health of Oregonians.

The Treasure Coast and Palm Beach County continue to grow a scientific research hub. Scripps Florida should complete its headquarters in Jupiter late this year or early next year. Scripps is expected to be joined by the Max Planck Society, a German nonprofit organization. It intends to create a bio-imaging research arm that will work closely with Scripps researchers to make bio-medical advances in the molecular study of diseases by uniting advanced optical microscopy, magnetic resonance and imaging sciences. The technology will allow researchers to study the structure, dynamics and function of molecules and tissues. The state and Palm Beach County committed to $187 million in incentives.

Max Planck is expected to create 1,824 jobs and $2.4 billion in labor compensation over a 20-year period.

1. Good news for the Treasure Coast

PSL is going through a tough time now with the housing collapse.
This has to be taken as a positive sign for the future. I don't see much of an impact on employment - there aren't many research professionals in the area now, and they will probably come from out of state. But, the dye is cast for the future as a more technically orientated economy/population, and that can't hurt.
I hear that IRCC (the local community college) is now offering courses in biomedical research and lab assistance.
