I'm so proud of my city (Tallahassee / Cheney's visit)
Edited on Sun May-02-04 08:38 PM by OhMyGod
This was sent to me in an email:

Bill of Rights Not Suspended for Cheney’s Visit to Tallahassee

In January 2003 at Jeb’s inauguration in cooperation with the Secret
Service the Florida Department of Law Enforcement suspended the Bill of Rights, except for an area behind the temporary bleachers.

Cheney was scheduled to give a commencement address to FSU graduates
Saturday morning 01MAY2004. May Day, Law Day and the first of ~twenty
anniversaries of “the end of major combat operations in Iraq.”

Friday, the night before, I gave a friend bail money and my computer
that contains my local progressive mailing program, with instructions,
if I was illegally detained.

When Cheney was scheduled, the Tallahassee Police Department was
requested to suspend the Bill of Rights in his general area and set up
concentration camp where, under armed guard, “free speech” would be
tolerated. Based on the Constitution of the United States, unlike
Neville Island, Pennsylvania, Evansville, Indiana, Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, Saint Charles, Missouri, Saint Louis, Missouri and
Tampa, Florida, Phoenix, Arizona, Tallahassee refused.

I was told by a TPD Captain that when the Secret Service made the
request to TPD, the response was, "You can't do that. This is Tallahassee."

The boards of the Tallahassee Chapter of the American Civil Liberties
Union, Vietnam Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace and the
Tallahassee Network for Justice and Peace have taken under
consideration writing letters of appreciation to the City of Tallahassee for its stand showing strong commitment to the Constitutions of the United States and Florida.

5. I did not attend but news reports
indicate that the speech was apolitical. I suppose he did not want a repeat of Westminster.

Yes there were protesters outside the civic center. They were not confined to any area.

I've attended protests in Tally before and I have to say, TDP seems very supportive of our right to protest. I've never seen anything that even remotely resembled intimidation.

Tallahassee is a fairly liberal little town. We always vote Democratic.
