Graham's New Book Is Aimed At Voters
By RICHARD LARDNER

TAMPA - After two terms as governor and three as a senator, Bob Graham is an icon in Florida. Yet political experts are split about the impact his new book could have on the presidential election in a state that has looked to him for decades. Between the hard covers of ``Intelligence Matters,'' the Democrat from Miami Lakes sets aside the centrist image he cultivated during 38 years in public office, tearing into President Bush with criticism that many Republicans will see as partisan.

Bush lacks the intellect and imagination to manage the war on terrorism, Graham charges, and by invading Iraq he has made Americans less safe than before September 2001.

As a former intelligence committee chairman in the Senate, Graham also accuses the Bush administration of covering up Saudi Arabia's role in the Sept. 11 attacks and repeatedly hindering a full investigation of events preceding the attacks.

That should resonate with voters of many stripes across the state, said Lance deHaven Smith, a Florida State University political science professor. <snip>
