Governor plans to reopen qualifying for Senate race
I can't believe that Jeb's getting away with this. It's indisputable that the Republican totally screwed up his filing papers. Now Jeb wants to ignore that deadline and choose another candidate, likely hand-picked by the Florida Republican Party.

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Jeb Bush said Wednesday he is planning to reopen qualifying for Republicans in the state Senate District 27 race to fill the place of a candidate who dropped out after admitting the signature on his loyalty oath was fake.

"We're preparing to do so, based on the preliminary ruling," Bush said. "The reason why we had to go to court is because it is not clear whether I have the ability to do this, whether I want to or not."

Later Wednesday, Secretary of State Glenda Hood's general counsel sent a letter to Bush's office asking that he reopen qualifying from 8 a.m. Sept. 8 until noon Sept. 9. If necessary, the letter asked that Bush schedule a special primary on Sept. 28.

"If the Circuit Court does issue an unfavorable ruling, which we do not expect given the court's recent ruling, we will promptly notify the affected Supervisors of Elections, who will not have yet provided notice for the special qualifying period and special primary election," the letter from Richard Perez said.

1. par for the course, really
we can't complain about this but accept the Laughtenberg (sp) nomination in NJ after the deadline. That said, it would be nice to see the court throw a wrench into Jeb's plan.

By the way, why the hell is our Sec of State appointed and not elected anymore? What is even the point of having her send a letter to Bush requesting it. She is handpicked by him, you know he'll go along with it...

3. 1998 election....
in 1998 the people of Florida were duped into voting for the Cabinet Reorganization Act which made the Secetary of State's office an appointed post. This act was also used to break up the university system.

4. thanks
I couldn't vote until the 2000 election because I was only 17 at the time of the 1998 election. I didn't know about that act.

Odd that Jeb! upholds this law but not the one passed 2 years ago that puts checks on his appointed university trustees.

5. Bullet Train
OK I didn't like the bullet train, but it was voted on by the majority in 2000. But Jeb wants us to vote again for it. If he doesn't like something, he'll just make us repeat and repeal. Hopefully he doesn't change the constitution and he gets re-elected. What a waste of space both Bush Brothers are!
