Army to begin destroying US nerve gas - then truck the caustic mix
I posted this to General but haven't had much response yet so I thought I'd post it here as well.

Haven't seen much about this since last November in The Journal. But it looks like they're not going to wait for us to approve before they get started. Am I missing something?

Also just added Delaware to my favorites - doesn't seem to be a lot of activity here but I promise to check in often and help kick things up a notch.

=======================================

Army to begin destroying US nerve gas - then truck the caustic mix across several states, from the western border of Indiana to New Jersey, to be processed further before dumping the (questionable) wastewater into our Delaware River!

"VX is a liquid with the consistency of mineral oil that can kill a healthy adult male with a single pinpoint droplet."

Here are many informative articles on what's supposed to happen:

Army to Begin Destroying Nerve Agent
By Associated Press
February 16, 2005

"...expects the 1,269 tons of VX to be destroyed in 2 1/2 years"

NOTE: I haven't read anything that says this is safe yet! See articles below:

Here are flash graphics and details of the plan

And here are two recent articles in a long series of articles, all of which can be found on this site:

1. Hmmm, isn't that about twice as much as Bush lied about Saddam having?
Of course, everyone knew that we had it long ago and weren't taking effective steps to destroy it.

2. Yeah, but no one gets to attack us for having it.
I took a quick look at your gallery - just to satisfy my own curiosity about being right --- I knew the full name just had to be "Mighty Quinn". Very cute.

3. Thanks :)
When I got him as a kitten, he just looked like a Quinn (and I'd been listening to that song like 5 minutes before).

4. Transfer of VX wastewater to DuPont plant still on hold 02/17/05:
Plan to neutralize VX will go forward
Shipment of nerve agent wastewater by Army to DuPont plant still on hold

Some environmental groups have continued to express concern that trace amounts of VX would survive the disposal process and reach the river.

DuPont spokesman Anthony R. Farina said the company plans to send results from a study of a revised treatment process to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by the end of the month.

The treatment study and CDC review "must be accomplished before we would agree to be involved in the Army's project," Farina said. "We've said that for several months, and we're committed to that."
