DuPont Co. said today it will invest $58 million towards the construction of two biofuel facilities in the United Kingdom as part of partnership with BP Plc. and British Sugar.

DuPont, the world’s third-largest chemical producer, and BP, the second-largest oil company in Europe, plan to build a biobutanol demonstration facility in 2009. The plant, which will be equally owned by the two companies, will test and produce larger scales of biobutanol, a second-generation biofuel that is more efficient than ethanol and can be made from feedstocks such as wheat, corn, barley and rye.

In addition, DuPont, BP and British Sugar announced plans to construct a 420 million liter ethanol plant in 2009 designed to help the U.K. meet its 2010 Renewable Fuels Obligation.

Both facilities will be located adjacent to an existing BP operation at Saltend, Hull, north of London.

Another project that will encourage and benefit from DuPont's continuing global rush into Genetically Engineered agricultural products.
