Will somebody in the Democratic Party challenge Lieberman?
Hi Connecticut peeps.

I think the time is coming for Lieberman to get booted out of the Senate in 2006. You need a real Democrat to go to D.C.. Your senator is an embarrasment to the party and to Democracy itself. I am hoping that somebody out there will come up to the plate and take on Lieberman and win. I am sure Howard Dean's Democracy for America will contribute some cash for that cause. Heck. Maybe I will also though I live on the West Coast.

What d'ya say Nutmeggers? Can somebody take on Mr. Republican Lite?

1. What ever happened to Toby Moffett?
He was a great liberal Dem congressman from the early '80's that I expected to see in the senate someday. Chris Dodd beat him and Moffett dropped out of sight. Any Nutmeggers know what the story is?

Is there anyone else who could possibly challenge Lieberman? I've even heard Nader is a possibility (he's a resident, apparently).

4. He is a lobbyist
His firm (Livingston Moffett Global Consultants) serves as a lobbyist for foreign governments in Washington, DC.

17. Weicker beat Toby--I worked on his campaign and was devastated
when he lost. The Courant did a big article in Nov, I think, about Toby trying to keep Ralph off the ballots around the country. It was pretty interesting. He was a good guy--I remember Leiberman from the campaigns at that time too. He was better then--but it really is time for him to go. He's an embarrassment.

2. He's really been ridiculous lately.
Especially the comment he made yesterday that essentially was an attempt to justify the torture of Iraqi prisoners.

That all being said, I just can't support running someone against him. We need to send the message to the country that our party is willing to tolerate all kinds of views. If we don't, we're just as bad as the Rethugs who are pretty much eating their own with this Club for Growth thing.

Lieberman may be a bit too right-leaning for my taste, but he's loyal to the party and NOT running around stumping for Bush like a certain Georgia DINO . We need to save running non-fringe primary challengers when it is really important. Had Zell Miller not announced his retirement, he would be the perfect example, but not Lieberman.

3. Our state Dems are too meek
Not many in the state leg. or in our Congressional delegation have strongly criticized Rowland... so, I can't imagine them having guts enough to take on Lieberman.

I think the party 'heavyweights' are going to be concentrating on beating Rell for governor in 2006, assuming Rowland resigns or is impeached - AG Blumenthal, Sec of State Bysiewicz, maybe Larson or DeLauro. I'd love to see Curry challenge Lieberman. Maybe we can bring back Lowell Weicker as a Dem?

5. That they are
I like Curry a lot, but did the state Dem leaders do squat? I listened to those debates. He blew Roland out of the water. Post debate- Little comments. Little support. Little publicity. :(
Roland is such a sleaze too making it all the more worse.

6. I'd love to see...
I'd love to see that police report from the incident involving Rowland & his ex-wife... the rumor mill says he tossed her down a flight of stairs, but it's never been officially confirmed. I think many have forgotten that...

Politically, though, Rowland has been a fairly moderate Republican.

7. Somebody should
2006, we need someone new.. this guy is washed up. Remember when he was telling the press in the primaries how he thought people would respond to him and vote for him, and when the cards were played nobody did. He sounds like aschmuck, looks like a schmuck, acts like a schmuck.. remember he moved to new hampshire!! It's funny to note the amount of times I find him not present to vote in the senate records I've been researching... apparently not doing his job!

Yes i know out of context it's a different meaning but maybe he meant it

"It is a safe assumption that I will run for re-election to the Senate and not do anything else." <- way to go joe, sums up your whole career.. be a senator and not do anything..

11. I'd love to have Lieberman out, but I'm no fan of Curry
My former Dem Town Chairperson said that many in State Central hated Curry cause his crew was predominately male chauvanist. Even CT NOW, a group I belong to, found that Curry reeked of male chauvanism.

Lieberman has lots of money in his campaign war chest. I don't see any Democratic politician challenging him. I won't vote for Lieberman in 2006 as long as he continues on the neo-con/Likkudite path. I'm planning at this stage of writing in Rachel Corrie for senator in 2006.

8. Lieberman is a disgrace.
I can't stand him, I believe he cost gore the election. After the first debate, when Gore looked so Unpresidential by sighing all the time, the democrats needed some heavy lifting by their VP candidate. They needed Liebermen to go out and show the world what a right wing asshole Cheney really is. But no, Lieberman had to show how Presidential he was, how nice he could be, and how civil both he and Cheney could be. Nice job Joe you just made the man of hate and evil look civil. It's all about Joe. There is no Democratic Party in this state, just one big Republican Party.

9. Not quite one big party
But, I think there are some Republicans in the state legislature, but
then there is Rowland and all the Dems somewhere in the middle.

10. For me, the last of many last straws re Lieberman was
finding out that he is honorary co-chairman (with Jon Kyl--ugh) of the newly resurrected Committee on the Present Danger. (WaPo article July 20--sorry no link. I tried to find it, but it's now in the paid archives. Maybe it's available somewhere on google? Title: The Present Danger. By Joe Lieberman and Jon Kyl page A17.)

This group has every neo-con I can name on its roster (and a short list of Dems). If these are the people Joe hangs with, he's not representing me, that's for sure.

Jeff suggested Curry. I agree. He'd be good. Or Larson maybe? And though I do agree that the Dems need to stick together this year, I also think that after we win (hope, hope), there needs to be some rethinking about who we Democrats are. Big tent, sure. But pushing for American empire? No thanks. JMHO.

12. Don't know if Curry is the man
Granted that he got a raw deal from the media and from the rest of the Democratic party, but he's shaping up to be a perpetual vote-non-getter. I don't know why he is so unpopular with political insiders, but he is, in a way that Larson or DeLauro -- to name two whom I think everyone would agree are genuine Democrats -- aren't.

I don't know that much about Larson, but I think he'd be a more formidable challenger than Curry. I think that trying to oust Joe would be an uphill battle for anybody, though.

18. Curry is very smart, but he doesn't come across well at all
there's nothing, but nothing charismatic about the man. The best thing he has going for him is that Colin McEnroe is his friend.

I wouldn't want to see Curry try this. Larson would be another story -- assuming we have a great replacement for him in the House.

19. And if you look at his fundraising, he's none too unpopular
with the CT brand of Republican, either...

No, I doubt he can seriously be challenged.

20. I am for Joe
I am proud to have supported Joe Lieberman for President and would gladly take him as my US Senator replacing Judd Gregg or John Sununu any day. You may not agree with him 100% of the time but he is a decent guy who is what he says he is - a moderate.

I think people in CT should focus on electing a Democrat governor and picking up those GOP US House seats instead creating primaries.
