Ken Salazar on the issues
Ken Salazar on the issues

July 12, 2004

• Should the tax cuts approved during the Bush administration be made permanent?

I support making some middle-class tax cuts permanent and reforming the estate tax so that family businesses can stay in the family.

• Given what you know today, was the invasion of Iraq justified?

The president made a persuasive case, but the mission has been mishandled. We've had too little straight talk about Iraq, our intelligence failures, the costs of the war and reconstruction, and how they will be paid. The real question is, what now? We cannot abandon the Iraqi people and withdraw before stability is achieved. We must rebuild the international coalitions that are the legacy of over 50 years of both Republican and Democratic administrations.

1. Not to start a flame war...
(And I voted for Ken at the State Convention) But those aren't really answers. He kind of evades saying anything concrete. First - the Bush tax cuts had nothing to do with middle class. So Ken: Do you favor making permanent Bush tax cuts for the wealthy? Or sunsetting/repealing those in favor of middle class tax cuts? Second - how are we going to rebuild international coalitions now that we have zero credibility internationally?

2.  Kerry's position is the same as Salazar's
on international coalitions. It's the Democratic party position, in fact - that Kerry would have the credibility to rebuild what Bush has destroyed. I don't doubt that Mike Miles also holds this position.

Of course there were middle class tax cuts - the removal of the marriage penalty comes to mind. An increase in the deductible for dependents - these were Democratic initiatives.

Your question to Mr. Salazar on making Bush's tax cuts to the wealthy permanent is unfounded, and in fact borders on being a smear. I have seen this sort of thing from Mile's supporters before and it is a damn cheap tactic, unworthy of the candidate.
