Looking for insight from Oakland Du'ers...why is Jean Quan siccing the cops on Occupy Oakland?
I thought she was the "progressive" candidate in the last mayor's race. Why would she turn into Mayor Daley about this?

1. My impression is that she's weak. She's up against
forces she can't manage. And OPD is a corrupt violent mess and has been for years now. They're an inch away from a DoJ takeover.

2. Actually the progressive candidate was Rebecca Kaplan
but Oakland has ranked-choice voting, so Kaplan and Quan were able to join forces to defeat the bogeyman, Don Perata (who, if he had been mayor, would have called in airstrikes on the Occupiers!).

3. Thanks for the info.
Maybe Kaplan will get it next time...or the guy who resigned from the Quan administration in protest of the Gestapo tactics.

4. There is the famed 18 mayor conference call about #Occupy, and more importantly, this:
"The protest has been allowed to run its course. Now it’s time to focus on jobs and the economic restoration of our city. It’s time for bold leadership and forceful action, not unending social experimentation. We call upon the Oakland City Council and the Mayor of Oakland to step up and provide cohesive, common sense leadership -‐-‐before it really is too late.

Sincerely,

The Board of Directors Downtown Oakland Association
Lake Merritt/Uptown District Association"
