A newly formed Democratic and pro-labor group on Monday stepped up pressure on Republican gubernatorial hopeful Meg Whitman to release 10 years of tax returns, saying former Gov. Pete Wilson should resign as chairman of her campaign if she doesn't.
Noting that Wilson consistently released his own returns when running for public office and called on his opponents to do the same, the group, Level the Playing Field 2010, asked Wilson in a letter to "live up" to his own standards.
The so-called independent expenditure group has vowed to raise millions of dollars to target Whitman, the billionaire former CEO of eBay, in negative ads.
After the committee's radio commercials began running last week, the Whitman campaign filed a complaint with the state Fair Political Practices Commission alleging several violations of election law. Among other things, the complaint questioned whether Level the Playing Field was secretly working in concert with the campaign of presumed Democratic candidate Jerry Brown.
The group called the complaint "frivolous."
