Snow predicted for Sacramento
Edited on Sun Dec-06-09 12:52 PM by Adsos Letter
Source: Sacramento Bee

Snow will fall and accumulate in Sacramento on Monday, the National Weather Service is predicting.

Temperatures in the capital will fall into the 20s.

A storm predicted to bring rain to Northern California this evening with cool dramatically and bring snow by Monday. Chances of precipitation are 100 percent, experts predict, and between two and four inches of snow will cover the valley floor. Northwest winds will blow about 10 mph.

Most of the snow will fall before 4 p.m.

I don't recall this happening before, so perhaps a heads-up is in order.

Or perhaps not.

Edit: Snowfall is exceptionally rare in Sacramento (at an elevation of only 52 feet (16 m) above sea level). The all-time record snowfall was 3.5 inches (9 cm) and occurred on January 4, 1888. Dustings occur every 5–10 years, with up to an inch accumulation in outlying areas. During especially cold winter and spring storms, intense showers do occasionally produce a significant amount of hail, which can create hazardous driving conditions. Significant snow accumulations occur each year in the foothills located 40 miles (65 km) east of the city.

I hear that argument quite often in person, and I've seen it online. One day of unusually cold weather anywhere becomes a disproof of global warming.

3. But will it happen? Snow was predicted for Atlanta yesterday.
There was no snow. We used to get three or four good snows when I was a kid.

Now we're lucky if we get one.

17. We had three inches about twenty years ago
a KCRA news truck set down the street up and broadcast the phenomenon for the noon news. The snow blanketing the shady areas of my lawn lasted three days. I don't know snow for squat, but I observed it felt warmer in the high twenties low thirties with snow than the valley (tule) fog days in the forties. Weird.

Sacramento sits at the base of the Sierra foothills, which quickly rise to the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Lots of snow in the mountains, and less in the foothills. Sacramento sits on the valley floor, and its weather is more that of the Sacramento/San Joachin Valleys, which run North-South through the state, rather than the Sierra's to the East.

But your nephew will probably enjoy it!

We were in Sacramento at the Delta King Sternwheeler for a Christmas party last night; it was definitely chilly.

And, on an entirely unrelated note, the Delta King is a sternwheeler docked on the river in Old Town (you probably already know this); last night the Christmas parade of lighted/decorated boats was passing outside, and I was without camera. Would have made a beautiful entry for this month's photo contest. :(

Stay Warm NV Whino; and be carefull driving around the hills in yer area! :hi:

15. Thanks for the warning! North CA coast--coastal area--snow tomorrow morning, freezing
at night through Thursday.

Just checked this site
http://tendayweather.com/changelocation.asp
for Fort Bragg, CA.

Snow is EXTREMELY unusual in CA coastal areas. Light dusting every twenty years or so--maybe. The immediate inland coastal ridge areas get snow dustings and freezes. But it's very rare for a place right on the ocean like Fort Bragg.

DRIP YOUR PIPES! Check your supplies for power outages. Avoid travel. (These particular roads very treacherous when icy.) Get fire wood in. Batten down the hatches!

33. We had a beach dusting where I live, about 20 years ago. Quite a novelty.
We have a sort of "Camelot" climate on the north coast (close to the ocean)--never too hot, never too cold--while just a couple of miles inland, temps can get extreme either way. And while we have some real heroes in coastal emergency services--much of it volunteer--we are under-served by the county and the state, and the feds, which gobble up our tourist dollars and give little back. So, basically, in a weather emergency (as snow and freezing temps on the coast is), we're on our own. We can expect power outages, possibly lengthy ones, closed roads, no newspaper delivery, delayed mail and package delivery, vegie gardens blasted, broken pipes, trees down and other problems. It's a fun and beautiful place to live, though, for all its inconveniences. And I will take your advice, and be safe and warm tonight! Thank you!

24. Cool...in 1976 there we had enough snow to make a little snowman
I may be off by a year one way or another, but it was the one year I recall any snow accumulation. I was in 4th or 5th grade. It sounds like they're looking for more than that now.

That winter was followed by years of severe drought, watering restrictions, conservation measures. I remember one aunt who had an old-style washboard (they reappeared in the stores briefly, I think), and would wash her clothes on the front porch then use the grey water to water the lawn. It made quite an impression.

We're at 1800 feet and they're predicting 4-6 inches. It's been maybe 10 years since we had that much snow. (We've been out here since 1988).

In 1990 (I think) we got a foot of snow one Sunday morning. I walked the dog (Siberian Husky) 10 miles through the snow to the store to buy a Sunday paper. Of course he loved it. The sun came out about noon and by the next morning you would never know it snowed but the creek behind our house was almost up to the banks.

It was supposed to get pretty cold here last night so I hosed down our orange trees to keep the temp from dropping below 28 (the ice actually insulates the fruit against the colder temps). When I checked them out this morning - no ice. Guess it never got that cold.

I'm not looking forward to these night temps for the next few days, though. I would gladly trade a bit of snow for this. We have dwarf citrus and avocado trees we're trying to protect from this hard freeze. Wish us luck!
