Got room for one more?
Figures. Just as people are leaving in droves, Ahh-nuld's balancing the budget on the backs of the poor, and El Nino is set to produce a miserable winter, now I get offered a job in San Jose.

Why, you might ask, would a Hawai'i person even consider such a thing? Well, the cublicle from which this post originates is surrounded mostly by empty space, either of part-time workers who have left for the day or of people who have left and have not been replaced. In short, the agency is circling the drain, and has been for the past year and a half. The sister agency in San Jose, by conrast, is led by one of the bright young up-and-coming stars in our field.

So, what do you think? Oh yes, while I was up there this weekend, I took a side trip to The City on Saturday. Loved loved LOVED it -- but that's just too far (on light rail, Caltrain, then BART) to think about doing except for a very special occasion.

1. Native Californian here...
Please come. We can always use more progressive voters.

You are quite fortunate to have a job offer in this climate. You have to take it, unless you think there are comparable jobs in the paradise you contemplate leaving.

I'm sick of Ahhnold's fuzzy math on this whole tax issue! We need to get the truth out there.

He says it's unfair that 45% of the taxes are paid by 2% of the people. Well, that wealthy 2% holds 95% of the money! So I say they should be paying 95% of the taxes! He must think if we are stupid enough to elect him, we must be stupid enough to know he isn't comparing apples and oranges.

2. I say it's worth a try.
I was in The City yesterday and it was fantastic. Took the kids up to Twin Towers.

3. SF is beautiful, but there's also...
The Coast - half moon bay has a GREAT fish n Chips place,
Santa Cruz, the inland if you get cold LOL
Monterey which is beautiful, Wine Country for long weekends, and Sac if you feel masochistic.
I will say this however... i H A T E driving through SJ.
If you don't already, get a GPS, you will need it.
I'm from the East Bay (Concord) and I would always get lost in SJ.
Oh yeah there's Gilroy Garlic Capitol of the World - I highly recommend the Garlic Festival =]

oh yeah... and make sure you are getting no LESS than 20+ an hour. You can't live in SJ on less, or anywhere in the bay area actually.

It's been a few years, and I left before the other shoe blew up in thermo nuclear fire, but I imagine housing is still very expensive.

I suppose being from Hawai'i you're used to outrageous cost for everything, but still, IMHO it's high.

That aside, I would recommend it. I miss it terribly, and I'm happy you have a job offer, esp if it means jumping ship before it goes completely under.

Luck with whatever you decide :)

7. No GPS necessary, as I'm a transit rider
Already did Sac for a meeting last month. :-) At least the hotel was right across from Old Sac.

I believe the Garlic Festival just happened. :(

Yup, it works out to just about 20 an hour. Indeed it does not look to be all that much less than HI. :eyes:

10. I suppose at this point its a matter of jumping ship while you can
as opposed to really moving up.
Some place you may find addictive, is Fry's Electronics hee hee.
But im a incurable geek.
There is also the outlet mall way out in Tracy.
of course... best of all... is the Jelly Belly Store in VacaVille LOL :)
Still.. even with public transit you WILL want to drive around on the weekends.
It's so beautiful there.
The mountains, the winding roads...
*gets lost staring out into space, remembering the beauty of N Ca., a single tear runs down his cheek*

5. Would you be living in San Jose proper?
I'm a recent transplant to the Silicon Valley from SF/East Bay, and I'm enjoying it so far. It's no Hawai'i, certainly. :) But if you like the City, you might want to look into living around Fremont (to catch BART) or near a rail station on the Peninsula.

I love the Bay Area, and we have several DUers in the area who I'm sure would make you feel welcome.

:hi:

6. I certainly would.
As a transit guy, I would not want to commute in from Fremont. Next time, though, I might try the back way (511 trip planner suggested this): VTA rail to Milpitas, bus to Fremont, BART to SF, Berkeley, wherever.

8. SJ has pretty good local transit, then.
But I really, really wish the South Bay transit and the peninsula rail would interface with BART more seamlessly. It takes hours and hours to do a loop around the bay.

9. My brother lived in downtown San Jose a while back...
there were some nice, albeit older, neighborhoods as I recall.
