Camp Nelson - Has Anyone Ever Heard of This Place???
My wife and I happen to be venturing north to Camp Nelson for the 4th of July in hopes of peace and quiet in the Sequoia Forest. Does anyone know of any cool hikes in the area or things to check out?

Is Sequoia National Park worth the extra hour and a half drive?

If you're in that area, is there anything going on for the 4th?

Thanks a bunch for any insight :hi:

1. Used to go there as a kid (50 yrs ago)
I remember lots of skeeters, but you're gonna have that anywhere in the Sierra.

Just a hunch but I'd stay away from Sequoia Park on the 4th if you are in search of peace and quiet.

Last year we had out of town cousins visiting over the 4th and they wanted to see Yosemite. As you might guess it was a zoo. Sequoia would be a milder scene of similar madness.

2. Skeeters...
I'm sure you're talking about the blood suckers and not the boats?

Do you know if the park itself is worth the drive to visit or do you get similar nature views from the forest itself? I'm not concerned about seeing a special named tree or road, but want to hike and fish in nature without annoying tourists.

Also, do you think it is safe for dogs off leash up there? I am not worried about her running off, but am concerned about how comfortable the wildlife is with people up there. Probably be best to just leash her or tie her up to a tree if I'm fishing?

As well, know of any fun hikes or things to check out around Camp Nelson?

Thanks much!! :)

3. Sorry, it's been a long time since I was there, but
But I do remember the road up there (I think it's Hwy 190) was really winding and steep so you have to take it easy. My sister used to get carsick every time we went up there.

Also, ticks are abundant so you should definitely keep your dog on a leash to limit exposure.

I can't remember any specific hikes, but I remember the fishing was excellent.

5. Are you just camping or are you going backpacking?
You might get more peace and quiet backpacking.

7. Neither... we're staying in a house
that we rented for the weekend. Cheap as heck, 5 minute walk from the river, hiking trails out the front door and nothing but peace and quiet. What more could ya ask for!?! :)

8. Florence Lake
I have never heard of this place, but it sure does look interesting!! It's probably too far a drive to get over there while I'm in Camp Nelson, but thanks for the invite!! We have always ventured up the Eastern Sierra side of the range and end up in Mammoth or June; but we decided to take a walk on the wild side and go up throught the Central Valley to enjoy Sequoia for our first time. I'm mainly looking forward to lots of peace, relaxation and TROUT to bbq :)
