ALL CALIFORNIA DEMS: Please VOTE on May 19. Clear Channel has declared war on Unions.
After months and months, the state legislature came up with a compromise budget to get California through the recession. Some of their plan needs voter approval May 19th in a special election. WE NEED TO VOTE "YES" on all the propositions for their plan to work.

However, KFI radio in LA and other Clear Channel outlets have declared war and are pounding their viewers EVERY DAY to vote "No" on all the propositions. Clear Channel is the Wal-Mart of radio and are known as "Cheap Channel" by radio talent and producers because of their poor pay and antipathy toward unions. In LA, John Kobylt of KFI radio trashes the police, fire, nurses' and teachers' unions every day and claims that by voting "No" on all the propositions, Californians can cause the state to go bankrupt and have to renegotiate all state salaries. Kobylt lives in a ritzy community and his kids go to private school, so he doesn't care if his local cop or his kid's schoolteacher can't pay their rent.

Clear Channel is counting on the fact that elections in off years--like this one--usually attract few voters, and they are right. So far, the polling numbers for the propositions have gone down, thanks to Clear Channel's efforts and the fact that the more conservative elderly audiences tend to vote in every election.

WE WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT THE FUTURE OF CALIFORNIA NEED TO VOTE "YES" on MAY 19.

Please, please, please, make sure you vote in the special election May 19.

2. The California Nurses Association opposes all the initiatives. So tell me how
that kickass liberal group ends up aligned with Clear Channel fascist fuckwads?

Cuz I don't know. I'm just trying to figure out how to vote on these initiatives. One of them looks to me like a clever ploy for Sacto politicos to get their hands on voter-designated school funds, at long last, and divert them to the general fund for corpo/fascist boondoggles. They've been trying to do this for years. Also, the funds for the mentally ill. I smell a rat in those two initiatives.

Clear Channel probably has a far different reason for pushing NO: tax increases. I'm not against tax increases, if they are fair (and they haven't been fair for a long time). What I don't want--and likely what the Nurses don't want--is Schwarzenegger and the corpo/fascists running Sacramento to be able to DIVERT funds that the voters have strictly mandated for certain inviolable purposes, by promising these temporary payouts, the hidden hook being to release them from previous voter mandates.

Some unions are divided. The CA Dem Party is divided. Deep fissures have arisen over these proposals. So it is not easy to decide how to vote. I am leaning all-NO. And I am a leftist voter.

3. I'm w/ you PeacePat
I am extremely suspicious of 'diverting' any funds to the general fund. These are concessions to the rethugs who held the entire state hostage until they got what they wanted. All theses initiatives do is kick the problem down thhe road. We'll be back in the same place a tear from now w/ even more concessions to the rethugs. Until we fix the 2/3s vote requirement, nothing will change.

4. I support the CA Nurses Association and agree! As well as Peter B Collins
which he also agreed by voting for the props is not going to fix the problem.

5. Not just the Nurses Assoc, but Credo Action and a number of other liberal groups oppose...
I'm left feeling extremely confused on how to vote.

Credo Action urges everyone to vote 'no' on All of the May 19th initiatives.

And Courage Campaign, likewise, urges all to vote 'no.' Courage Campaign (a progressive CA org) has compiled a list of several progressive orgs (including union groups) showing that there is no consensus among progressive groups on how to vote:

12. somebody gave me Pacific Palisades Dem Club analysis of all the props- NO on all of them
here's what the pamphlet stated - check it out and decide for yourself!!

"We recognize that CA is facing an enormous budget crisis but believe the legislature is abusing the ballot measure process to resolve these matters without public hearings and debate. In this case, the legislature has passed the buck to the public and expects us to discern very complicated and far-reaching proposals. Therefore, we are opposed to all of the measures on the ballot.

NO on Prop 1A- State Budget Reform is so unclear that the Legislative Analyst remains confused about what it will do. It does impose a spending cap which ties the hands of government, in the form of a Constitutional initiative, for years to come and gives the Governor new power to make midyear budget cuts. This cap could force major cuts to schools and health care services in future budget years. Just months ago, the legislature approved $2.5 billion in tax cuts for big oil and other industrial interests, which makes its claim of fiscal necessity difficult to defend. We will have to go back to the drawing board if this does not pass, but it is not fair for the legislature to blame the public for refusing to implement such a far reaching proposition that the League of Women Voters and other responsible organizations are opposing it.

NO on Prop 1B- Education Funding: Payment Plan requires the passage of Prop 1A and would provide a one time payment of $0.3 Billion dollars to the schools which won't begin until 2011. These measures were put together to keep the teachers' union from opposing the spending cap in Prop 1A. The potential problems of making a spending cap an amendment to our Constitution in return for these funds poses risks to other groups and could acually jeopardize future school funding.

NO on Prop 1C Lottery Modernization would attept to raise money by selling bonds that would be paid off by future lottery sales. The bonds would have to be sold off at unfavorable interest rates, given California's poor credit rating. There is no guarantee that lottery profits would be enough to make the necessary payments to education.

No on Prop 1D and 1E Children and Mental Health Services Funding will cut essential mental health and developmental services to vulnerable populations that voters approved through previous initiatives (Prop. 10 and )rop 63) in order to make up for deficiencies in the general fund. This sets a dangerous precedent for altering initiatives by raiding the funds designated for specific services in this case mental health and children's services.

No on Prop 1F Elected Official's Salaries is a gimmick that would prevent legislators from getting apay raise in deficit years. It would save hardly any money, is a diversion from the real reasons for our budget crisis, and was put on the ballot to satisfy Republican State Senator, Abel Maldonado."

13. SEIU is also opposed to several of the props
I know that the governor is saying that California will fall into the ocean if the props aren't passed, but I have a hard time believing anything he says.

6. The SEIU CA, one of biggest unions in CA, OPPOSES 3 of the 6 initiatives.
Why would a UNION align with Clear Channel if Clear Channel's goal is to declare war on unions? Doesn't make any sense...

Arnold wants 1A and he will use that for a power grab. I dont trust that liar and that is why I will vote NO on 1A.

The Courage Campaign also sent out e-mails urging a NO vote on All the propositions.
