- Fugro Airborne SurveysSAN DIEGO – If you've seen what appears to be a strange-looking aircraft off the coast this week, sporting wires from end to end, there's no need to see an optometrist. Your eyes are fine.
What you saw – and may be seeing for the next few days – is an aircraft being used for electromagnetic survey work.
The aircraft is a modified DeHavilland Dash 7 belonging to Fugro Airborne Surveys, based in Ottawa, Canada.
Operations Manager Davin Allen confirmed Thursday that the aircraft being seen in San Diego belonged to Fugro, but would not disclose what the company is surveying or the name of the client.

The signal penetrates water and ground, Allen said. The system is used to for mining, oil and gas exploration, and mapping fresh or saline water, he said.
