Presidential race a hot topic in GOP-leaning Placer County

One in a series of occasional stories about California voters.

Al Gutierrez and Ernie Recabaren have a pool game going at Sun City Lincoln Hills, but give them a nudge, and they'll dish a little on politics.

"I'm not sure I like Obama that much," says Gutierrez, 78, a retired electrical worker and a registered Democrat.

"Why not?" barks his 80-year-old friend Recabaren, who retired from U.S. Shoe in San Francisco. "He's too young? What? It's not because he's black."

"It has nothing to do with race," says Gutierrez, lining up his next shot. " … I'm just not comfortable with him."

Recabaren heaves a sigh and the game goes on.

In this very "blue" state, Gutierrez and Recabaren are Bay Area transplants living their golden years in Placer County, a sprawling region that is a statistical sliver shy of being the reddest place in California.

The 1,500-square-mile county, which extends from urban Roseville to Lake Tahoe, has one of the highest concentrations of registered Republicans at 49.7 percent, compared with 29.6 percent registered Democrats. :puke: :puke:

Placer County is edged out only by Modoc County, in the state's far northeastern corner, where Republicans are at nearly 51 percent.

1. The up side is you get to vote for Charlie Brown
Have you noticed The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee stepped in and has begun buying airtime for ads, ads that are not too flattering towards Tom McClintock? Someone believes Charlie Brown is close to flipping the fourth district seat!

5. Yes, but we can supress the vote if we just spread the rumor that there's a big mall-wide sale at
the Galleria.

Or Tractor Supply, for those Loomis voters. ;)

6. We have registered at least 5,000 new Democrats
since last year in Placer County alone. Your stats are outdated. It is still more republican but not with as wide of a spread. I think Brown can win. Numerically he can. I've been phonebanking and we only need one of five rethugs to get him in. We are getting this, at least on the phone. We also have most of the indies' support. I am also seeing and hearing that there are a few rethugs who won't vote this time. I don't encourage them to. I honest to god think he will take this election. We are out canvassing, phonebanking daily and plan a big push this week. I have never seen anyone canvassing for McClintock and at the last debate there was no one there with McClintock signs. Not one person. Brown supporters were there. The yes on 8 signs are all over the place, but we have a large contingent of No on 8, especially the young people. We ran out of No on 8 signs so that's why you don't see as many. Sit tight, it is coming! We plan to crush them.

10. not as red as you might think
merced county is one of the CA counties over 50% dem. fresno as of 9-24-08 was with in 1.5% of over taking the retuglicans. waiting for the 15 day prior to (10-20-08) report to be posted with all the energy and an up to the last minute push some are speculating that we we are with in a 1/2% or 2,000 if not have overtaken the r's

11. Ah, but remember that many of the "blue" areas are still conservative.
Yeah, Merced is blue, but it's an area that overwhelmingly supports Dennis Cardoza, a leader of the Blue Dogs and a guy so conservative that he could switch to the Republican party and few would notice a difference. McNerney is probably the only real lefty Dem representing the Valley, but that's largely because his district also includes a chunk of the east Bay.

While the Central Valley may have a large Democratic minority, I wouldn't count on it going "liberal" any time soon. There are a huge number of single-issue Democratic voters here who are conservative, but break with the Republican party over one or two issues (the primary one being illegal immigration, since the region is still largely an agricultural economy and those immigrants are essential for fieldwork).

Merced County, with its Democratic majority, still supported Bush overwhelmingly in both elections. I'm just sayin...

14. I predict people on this forum will have a nice surprise
from the San Joaquin Valley the day after the election. The crow will be served on a bed of polenta and baby asparagus. :P

15. Driving around Modesto, McCain/Palin signs outnumber Obama signs 3 to 1.
I know Modesto isn't representative of the whole valley, but it's a fairly major city.

Yes On 8 signs are everywhere too :(

16. idk.. i was just in Camarillo, Ca
on a vacation from my very leftist Sonoma and i was just sick by the shittons of McCain and Yes on 8 signs. I even encountered a group of 8 people who were exploiting kids that had signs that were just sick.

i was pretty thrilled to come home and see the polar opposite, all Obama, all No on 8.

17. I was in Lodi last weekend and actually saw one Obama sign
that's amazing.

I live in very liberal V-town and yet there are Yes on 8 signs everywhere.
