So Doug comes over to borrow my Sawzall and i ask him about the sign "I respect the institution of marriage" "is that why you've done it 3 times?" "Ha ha, very funny and why are you taking it so personally, you're not gay" "You cannot borrow my sawzall and you should take that personally, ok?"

3. Statistics say, if permitted to continue eventually 10% of marriages will be gay . . .
Maybe "Doug" fears if he continues his profligate ways, in another 6 marriages he may have a same-sex situation himself. He doesn't just want to deny others their rights -- he wants the State to save him from himself!

*Gotta add a disclaimer, I haven't a clue what percentages and assorted stats there are for marriages or any relationships. Just going for a laugh. And, for the humorously-impaired, and because I never know how my little jokes may play out, here's the requisited :sarcasm: icon.

4. Take your Bible over to his house and ask him to explain
Matthew 19:1-12, especially verse 12. In verses 1-11, Jesus interprets Jewish law on a man's divorce of his wife which prohibited divorce except in cases in which the wife committed adultery.

Here is the King James version of verse 12.

For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb; and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men; and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

"Eunuchs so born from their mother's womb" What do we call them? Jesus says nothing negative about the eunuchs, but he does say something negative about divorce.

The last part is the best: He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

Some people can understand and feel compassion. Some cannot. People who are voting yes on Prop. 8 have no compassion. They are as far from following the example of Jesus as anyone could be.

5. Most interesting -- I need to read and think this through a little. . .
but a very interesting commentary, to say the least.

Or, as the Talmudic scholar Hillel observed in the 1st century:
"What is hateful to you, do not do to your neighbour. This is the whole Torah; all the rest is commentary."

6. My interpretation is that the pharisees were trying to embarrass
Jesus. They thought he would not know the Jewish law and would make a fool of himself. He proved his knowledge and then shared a little joke with his friends the disciples about how to avoid committing adultery and, presumably, the horrifying consequences of being caught committing adultery. So Jesus said, I would guess with tongue in cheek, that, well if you were not born without certain male organs and they weren't cut off for any purpose, you could always get rid of them for spiritual reasons. That's my take on it. It was a joke.

But what is important about it is that Jesus clearly recognized that there were even in his time, some people were not heterosexual from birth, but Jesus clearly did not condemn those who were not heterosexual, for whatever reason. So, why should modern Christians condemn them if Jesus did not. They will probably point to the writings of Paul, etc. But, for Christians, Jesus is supposed to have stated the Word of God. So, what he said counts more.

I did not find this verse. I attended a discussion about gay marriage last spring, and an evangelical pastor who studied the Bible and gay marriage and even wrote a book on it said that he could find no Biblical basis for opposing gay marriage.

The first person to be converted to Christianity who was not Jewish was a Eunuch. I believe he was from Ethiopia.

8. Wasn't Paul supposed to be gay?
I make no claims on knowing anything about the bible. I just remember listening to Paul's letters in the 'Lesson' part of the Episcopal service. I never liked his attitude toward women. I remember some cleric once speculating about his homosexuality.

7. Oooooh, you just gave me an idea.
A neighbor of ours put one of those "vote for hatred" signs in his yard yesterday.
And we have a sawzall. I think I'll go and use it on HIM. Would that be overkill?

11. But I vote by mail. I'll send it in now and then do him in.

I drove by his house today and it took everything in me to not rip the sign out of his yard.
The only thing that stopped me was daylight. LOL. Now when it's dark.....

I wouldn't lend him my Sawzall because he'd probably break it.

12. Good for you.
I was feeling pretty optimistic about this one, then on a few recent drives through town the Yes on 8 signs seem to be popping up everywhere. I think churches are giving them away for free.

13. Like churches have nothing better to do with their time.
Hence why I don't go anymore. That and the fact that they put up donation forms in the lobby.

15. I respect the institute of marriage too..
which is why I can't understand supporting a proposition that would destroy the marriage of two friends of mine.

There are thousands of gay families in CA right now that would be destroyed by this proposition. You would think that would be worse than making some guy think about two guys kissing on a wedding cake.
