Help needed to register my friend in San Francisco
I need some direction on what would be the easiest way for my friend to register in San Francisco. Here's the short story:

- she used to live in Massachusetts where she was registered
- she moved last year to San Mateo and was registered there
- she moved last winter to San Francisco but has not changed her registration to the city/county

my questions are:
are there sites in the City where one can register?
can she register online?
what's the deadline to register (for the Nov. 2 election)
does she have to fill out a lot of paperwork, or can her San Mateo registration be used?

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I am anxious to sign my friend up....her father was chairman of the board of Smith & Wesson and an iron-clad Republican, but she's a little more open-minded and she'll be voting Kerry on Nov. 2!

6. Does your friend have a drivers license?
She is probably already registered under the proper address if she changed the address on her license under the 'motor voter' law.

If not, she just needs to go to her local DMV or county elections office and fill out a change of address form. Tell her to be sure to bring proof of residence in the form of a utility bill or rent receipt with her new address on it.

In either case, she can always request a 'provisional' ballot at the polls on election day. Have her call her County elections office and ask where the polling place is for her address.

She can contact the Secretary of State's office here,

http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_vr.htm

When to Re-Register to Vote
You will need to re-register to vote when:
# You move
# You change your name
# You change your political party affiliation

As a California voter, you should be aware that there are ongoing local elections throughout the state. The 15-day close of registration deadline for these local elections varies depending on the actual date of the election. If you need to know a deadline for a local election, you will need to contact your local county elections office to confirm the deadline. You can acquire a voter registration form either at your local county elections office, library, or U.S. Post Office. It is important that the completed voter registration form has a 15-day deadline postmark on it. It is not the Secretary of State's Office desire to disenfranchise anyone from the voting process.

The Deadline to Register to Vote

In California, the deadline to register to vote for an election is 15 days before each local and statewide election day, so please register early! Click here for more information on California's 15-day close of registration.)

The deadline to register to vote for the November 2 election is October 18, 2004.

Additional Assistance
For additional assistance with voter registration, please contact the Secretary of State's office at any of the following toll-free numbers:

7. Here is the San Mateo County voter site
The non-intuitively named http://www.shapethefuture.org. If she can't vote in her new location, maybe she can vote absentee here in SMC.
