I'm having weird earthquake premonitions tonight
It was really strange, I was watching TV and had my eyes closed (OK, so not exactly *watching*) and almost dozing off a bit, and suddenly I felt as though we were having a really major quake, I mean major, bigger than others I've been in (and I've been in both Sylmar and Northridge) -- but after a few seconds, I realized that we weren't and nothing was moving. It was so bizarre, and reminded me of something that happened during the Sylmar quake, where during the quake I *saw* the bathroom medicine cabinet shake open and everything fall out -- only... that didn't happen. Nothing in the bathroom broke at all, but during the quake, I was right across from the bathroom and really saw this happening. That's how this thing tonight felt. Like, I was sure it was happening, and yet, it didn't.

So then I go to the earthquake.usgs.gov site just to see if anything was happening, and there for the whole state of California, there was only 1 red box (meaning a quake in the past hour) and it was in my area, but it was tiny, only 2+ or so, surely I couldn't have felt it, and surely not to the degree that I thought I had. Plus, it had happened 20 minutes prior to when I "felt" this one. So, I figured, a very active imagination (or something) tonight. Then later, I checked back again, and now there are 2 red boxes, both clustered in the same area near me, and the second one had occurred about 5 minutes *after* I had felt whatever I felt.

So I'm kinda freaking out just a little, wondering if *something* is going on... probably not, but it was just so weird.

I'm in Nor. Cal, btw. Anyone else *feeling* anything odd tonight?

Local gets call to join surfing superstars at big-wave contest

Half Moon Bay, Calif. (AP) -- As 30- to 40-foot mountains of moving water charged across the North Pacific on Friday, big-wave surfer Ion Banner was trying to think about something — anything — else.

"Sometimes you get too excited about it, so over the years I've tried to learn not to think about it," the rangy, 38-year-old said in a recent interview at his small house on a hill overlooking Pillar Point Harbor. Just beyond the rocky seawall that shields the boats from the open ocean is one of the surfing world's most awesome spectacles, the nasty and unpredictable break known as Mavericks.

On Saturday, Banner will be among two dozen elite big-wave surfers who will point their big-wave "gun" surfboards down the swells' three-story faces in the latest installment of the legendary Mavericks Surf Contest. Banner has competed several times before, with his best showing — a 10th-place finish — coming in 1999. http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2008/01/11/sports/s124612S87.DTL

3. I used to get that feeling before quakes
I'd think there was an earthquake, but there wasn't. Then within 1-2 days, there would be one. Once I even felt it in St. Louis, then came home to the Bay Area next day, and we had a quake.

For some reason, after the Loma Prieta quake, that stopped working for me. I occasionally think I feel a quake when there isn't one, but it's never accurate at predicting them any more.

4. Well the weird night winds are blowing out here in Yolo county
and they are quite rare. So, we shall see. All of my animals are acting normally.

Now two weeks ago this totally weird thing happened in the morning. Over 30 of my 80 odd sheep started butting heads. Sometime the rams will do this. If they go wild, they can kill each other. But this was totally different. Ewes were butting heads, wethers, lambs, a bunch of ewes butting one ewe. I took my dog out and just tried to keep them moving and walking so they would stop it. But every time we stopped they started in again. Nobody got killed but the head butting went on another half of an hour. I was thinking then- I wonder if an earthquake is coming. But then nothing. I decided to feed them more hay. Perhaps they were just grumpy.
