Roth one of three Democrats backed by party to run against incumbent

WASHINGTON - David Roth might consider himself one of the chosen few as he prepares for a major political fight to unseat Rep. Mary Bono in next year's election.

The 36-year-old state education official is one of three Democratic House candidates the national party intends to support in California out of 20 potential Democratic challengers next year.

The La Quinta resident has gained the party's backing because of the fundraising prowess he has shown so far. He has netted more than $100,000 and plans a fundraising sprint until year's end.

"The reason I wanted to do this is to show a robust and impressive number and variety of people contributing to this campaign," Roth said.
