Looking to meet DU-ers in San Jose and environs

I apologize profusely if this isn't a proper venue for this kind of message, and doubly so because I've never written anything like it before It's just that job is sending me to San Jose for all of November, possibly longer. I'll be half the world away from home, which is Poland - a temporary escapee from a country overrun by rabid rightwingers in both parliamentary and presidential elections last month. (You guys may well be closer to the end of the residency, while we're only two weeks into the mess and things are already looking abject for progressives.)

By daytime I'll be consulting for a software localisation project, but I've no special plans for afterhours, so if you're around San Jose and fancy a beer with a MIHOP-er, just email me at marek (at) tranglos.com .

1. Welcome to CA

I'm down in LA, but my family is originally from Poland, and I was paying attention to the elections. You know you're off to a great start when before the new president even takes office the EU is threatening to take away your voting rights in the union because of his anti-gay & pro death-penalty vows. Both major candidates weren't that great though, were they? They did pick the worst of two evils as far as I can tell.

I don't know if the world has ever had a higher number of bad newly elected presidents at the same time. Iran, Poland, Germany, America...

4. That, and we had a fake bomb scare

in Warsaw just three days before the second round of presidential voting. Eleven bomb-like thingies with fuses but no explosives, scattered around downtown Warsaw, and a hooded guy captured by CC cameras as he was (so they say) emailing a warning to news media. You can tell we're allies!

3. I'll be looking forward

to meeting DU-ers. I certainly need commiseration on the freedom-phobic cabal that's just won elections here in Poland :) I'm leaving home in two hours and should be arriving in San Jose in 24 hours or so. I hope to do some traveling - SF and LA of course, but I'd love to venture a bit further too, if time allows.

Spending a big chunk of European winter in California certainly sounds good to me!
