LAT: Abortion Effort Isn't Untested
Abortion Effort Isn't Untested

By Jenifer Warren
Times Staff Writer

November 2, 2005

AUSTIN, Texas — Chaundra Smith got pregnant last spring. Awash in conflicting emotions, she was sure about one thing: Telling her parents wasn't an option.

But when Smith telephoned an abortion clinic for an appointment, she learned that state law required what she so desperately sought to avoid — that her parents be notified. Determined to dodge disclosure, she waited 2 1/2 months until her 18th birthday, when the rule no longer applied — and her abortion was somewhat riskier.

Smith could have asked a judge for an exemption, but she was unaware she had that right. Her experience, interviews suggest, reflects the lingering uncertainty — especially among teenagers — surrounding the abortion law passed in Texas six years ago.

With Californians poised to vote Tuesday on a similar measure, Proposition 73, activists on both sides of the issue are using the experience of other states to bolster their campaign claims. In Texas, a large state with a diverse population like California's, sponsors say the law has been a resounding success, reducing teen abortions and ensuring that parents have a legal role in their daughters' reproductive lives.

1. This is such a despicable idea
How on earth can anybody expect a scared teenager ask a fucking JUDGE for permission for an abortion? I can't believe this is on the ballot in freaking CA. Granted, CA has passed some really evil props in the past but I really hope that people are smart about this

3. It is easy to get a prop on the ballot
It isn't so easy to get it passed. This has been shot down many times before and it is so far behind in the polls it is unlikely to pass this time.

5. I wish it were down in the polls--
but the forced breeders have come out in force, scaring parents about this and making people think it will cut down on teen abortions--while making light of the fact that if passed it WILL create more teenagers in crisis, more dead infants found in trash cans, etc., and more teens attempting to self abort through dangerous methods...

This proposition is just a weak attempt to chip away at choice in CA slowly but surely. It's bullshit!

Slightly off topic, Senator Mc Cain has no fuckin' business on my television telling me how to vote. He doesn't live in CA...get a life assbag!

6. Word about McCain
I haven't been watching much television but I saw him in an ad concerning Prop 77 (the one on redistricting). I guess Arnold needed help since there are not really any popular California Republicans.

7. That's true--
I still hate seeing McCain promoting anything for our state. It doesn't seem appropriate. It also seems a rather transparent move on the 'right's' part to try to manipulate the California populace toward the GOP.
