California Democrats refuse to hold "Fourth of July" Celebration
Edited on Wed Jul-07-04 02:29 PM by patriotvoice
No, I'm not a Freeper lurker and I'm not trying to start a war; I'm seeking information on an article forwarded to me.

The article is word-for-word available here:
http://www.humaneventsonline.com/article.php?id=4365

In short, State Assemblyman Campbell insists "Democrats" refused to hold a "Fourth of July celebration" for the "unquestionably American hero" Adm. J. Denton (Ret.) because of Adm. Denton's views on the "separation of church and state," despite the fact that the "Democrats" hold "celebrations" for "cinco de Mayo," etc.

Google gets me this article at the following sites, in order:
freerepublic.com
humaneventsonline.com
newsmax.com
californiarepublic.com
tednugent.com

Not exactly a representative sampling of news media. So, what I'm interested in is a) non-obviously-biased sources, and (ideally) b) information from DUers on the scoop.

1. found a bio
REAR ADMIRAL JEREMIAH A. DENTON, USN (RET.) is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy who served on ships, as a flight instructor, and a pilot during Vietnam. While flying a combat mission in 1965, he was shot down and imprisoned in various North Vietnamese POW camps until 1973. During a televised interview, Denton defied his captors by blinking the word "torture" in Morse code. His leadership of American resistance led to four years in solitary confinement and further brutalities. For his heroic act, he was awarded the Navy Cross, and received numerous other decorations. Following his retirement from active service, Adm. Denton was elected to represent Alabama in the U.S. Senate, where he emphasized the connection between family strength, national morality, and the defense of civilization. He was appointed by President Reagan to be Chairman of the Commission on Merchant Marine and Defense, and founded the Coalition for Decency (now the National Forum Foundation). Adm. Denton is currently a member of the Publication Committee of Crisis magazine. His book When Hell Was in Session was recently re-issued on its 25th anniversary.

2. Google...
show absolutely no articles from the mainstream press on this, only the one opinion piece by the Assemblyman. And in reading the piece, Assemblyman Campbell sounds like he has some sort of axe to grind. I would love to hear the other side of the story, though I have a feeling this may have something to do with:

"A number of veterans of the last 4 wars were present. Admiral Denton gave a very moving speech about the 4th of July and about the undeniable commitment of our founding fathers' to their faith in God."

That doesn't sound like a 4th of July celebration to me, it sounds like a religious revival.

7. I believe the poster was criticizing the activity, not the people.
I.e., You may be devoutly religious, and your religious beliefs may shape your moral and ethical stance, but we must keep its activity out of the government.

5. Any more information on this, or am I going to have to accept that...
... "California Democrats are anti-American!"

Yes, those are the words that will be used to describe them, and I'll have no retort other than "it can't be independently verified."

Note, nothing new seems to be on the web.
