1. Land and housing are very cheep. Cultural activities are limited
to the Memphis area, some great blues and jazz clubs and some fantastic restaurants. Good fishing and boating on the river and lakes in the area. Very flat! No hills close to the area you will be in a river plain. You will be about 1 hour from the Ozarks and about four hours from Branson Mo. so if you like country/folk/bluegrass music you'll a happy camper. Check the Memphis city website for the local doings. The temp will be almost identical to Va. with some wild thunderstorms each summer. Mostly they miss the Memphis area. You will be close to mound city the largest mound builder society site in the world. It is a conservative area but I'm from there so some do have brains, though most are very Christian as it is the social occasion everyone has, i.e. church. I own 40 acres in hardy Ar. which is about 65 miles west/north of the area. Land up there is going for about 1000.00 and acres. I think you can get a small home or mobile home in the Memphis are for about 30 to 60,000.00 with good land. Check out the Ark real estate guide on the web. I intend to retire there in about 5 years, it's far enough away from everything that no one bothers you and still close enough to visit on a day trip. Good luck!

2. I do like bluegrass
checking the city sites shows you the picturesque part of life in that city but not the reality...

thanks for you input...
Right now I am in flat land too.

Having the mountains only 1 hour would be nice.

Sailing takes a bigger pond than most people realize...

where or what state are you living in right now. You said you would retire there????

how far long a drive would it be to the gulf???

Hardy, Arkansas....Hmmmm some place I should check out???

so it is worth checking out for employment....
I owe so much money....I need something full time for awhile...

wanted to go really west.....but it would be a new area to explore for at least a year....

Thanks...if you think of anything else let me know...

3. Actually you can sail in one of two huge lake systems. West
about 4 1/2 hours you find Bull Shoals lake it's massive. Further south you will find Lake Dardnel it's also massive. The river provides good boating but hard work for a sail. I'm living in Maryland now very close to the bay. The gulf is about a 7 to 8 hour drive, a long trip but then it's the ocean. No work in Hardy it's a small town on Spring River, if you like trout fishing it's as good as it gets. The river starts in Mammoth Springs Mo. a single spring which flows out 500,000 gals per hour. It's clear and cold the trout love it. There is a retirement area called Cherokee Village Ark. that is a man made are with several lakes so it's kind of a tourist place which was thriving under Bill Clinton's time but has felt very hard times under the shrub. Memphis would be a great area to use as a base to check out the west, almost everything is within two days drive, from Cal to Mon to AZ to Min. so it's a great base to work from.

5. You can do alright on that if you other bills are low. You can rent
for 250 to 350 a month. I like Maryland but it's getting very crowded and when you retire you want more room and less people and a cheaper place to live. I'm a hunter and fisherman and hiker so Ark. is great for me. I also like folk music, blues and jazz so those are all pluses. It's a good base to look around the Midwest and west. The thing about Memphis which surprises many people is that there aren't many high rises, land is cheep and flat so the city is low and wide. Wait until you see the cotton fields in bloom, it's pink and white and beautiful. In the fall when it's time to pick the fields will look like snow has covered it. Good luck!
