What are people's thoughts
on Jan Brewer these days and on the budget?

I have to say, Brewer has surprised me. I still don't like her - never will and never will vote for her - but she has surprised me.

1. Could You Elaborate?
I don't follow Az. state politics much. Way too depressing. What has she done (or not done) that has surprised you?

2. Well, she vetoed the
education and DES cuts and the repeal of the state property tax. And her very veto of the first budget bill surprised me. She has come across as fiscally smarter (while still more fiscally conservative than I like) than most of the legislature. Now, granted, its not hard to be fiscally smarter than the legislature seeing as how they have bought into an ideology that is designed to eliminate their jobs (i.e., the Grover Norquist drown government in a bathtub idea). And she's willing to fight the boneheads in the legislature. The anti-abortion stuff and the pro-gun stuff still really, really piss me off and, as I said, she's more fiscally conservative than I like but I expected her to be lock-step with the Republicans in the legislature and she hasn't been.

3. The Legislators are more concerned with serving
Grover Norquist and the Goldwater Institute than they are with serving their constituents and the best interests of the State of Arizona. I'm sure signing the "no tax pledge" or "don't raise taxes pledge" seemed like a good idea at the time, but times change and policies must adapt. Compromise isn't a dirty word. Rigid ideologies require adaptation in tough times and these are tough times.

4. Thanks
It does sound like she has at least one foot planted in reality. Then again, a female Ev Mecham would have provided more entertainment value......

6. New Budget
I saw on the front page of the AZ Rep, Brewer's budget had passed, then promptly had to leave town,

Is Janet Napolitano's legacy of pro-education remaining intact? I am referring to continuing the program of offering free tuition to the top high school students to entice the best and brightest to remain in AZ?

Thx,
~s

7. Brewers better than the legislature
I expect the state to go blue soon. That is one thing Brewer has done. The GOP legislature have hung themselves. They knew a tax increase would likely be approved and that's why they wouldn't let it go to a vote. The silly things they have done haven't impressed the Republican base either. On the state level, people are thinking Az should be trying to balance it's checkbook and the push through a tax cut. Wrong move. Goodbye.

Yeah for us.
