'Guns in bars' bill back for 2nd shot
Added twist: No drinking while packing heat

Feb. 15, 2005 12:00 AM

Pistols, rifles, shotguns - Arizonans soon could load them up and tote them into the bar or nightclub of their choice.

In a latest tribute to the Wild West, Arizona legislators have come up with a plan to legalize loaded weapons in places that serve alcohol.

Senate Bill 1363 breezed through the Senate Judiciary Committee on a 5-2 vote Monday and appears headed toward a promising future in the full Senate and House.

To help ease its passage, lawmakers have added a twist: Arizonans would have to avoid actually drinking an alcoholic beverage while carrying the loaded weapon.

1. fine, but if I were a bar owner
I'd say anyone carrying a weapon did not meet dress code.

Can you imagine the scene at a crowded nightclub velvet rope? "I'm not on the list?!? (pulls weapon) I'm on the list now buddy!" Four other people in line pull weapons and begin shooting at the criminal.

Boy howdy. What a fucking buncha hayseeds.

2. Just what we need...
a bunch of drunks with guns. Remind me to never go out after night in AZ.

Is this yet another case of the cops wanting to create more work for themselves?

3. so how do they propose to stop someone with a gun
from drinking exactly? And can that person drink at home? Bigger gun? Maybe the nuclear option (bars will have nuclear weapons for such instances)? When they answer these questions please post. I am sure other states would like to get in on this action.
What's next - drive-in bars where you can sit in your car & drink in comfort?

4. sigh
You call the police. That's what you do whenever you see someone with a gun. They're trained to handle those idiots.

7. Good Advice
Except here in Tucson, it sometimes takes the police time to get anywhere. Besides how many people can one person shoot with a gun before the police arrive, and that would probably include the bartender.

I recall while working at the Pima County jail, a jewelry store was robbed in broad daylight to the tune of $25,000.00, and it took the TPD over 2 hours to respnd to the call.

But at a local mall, when someone fell in the food court, 6 TPD officers were there in minutes, but they still arrived after the mall
security people did.

6. Drive thru bars already exist in some places

TEXAS LAWMAKER AIMS TO STOP DRIVE-UP DRINK STANDS COLD

Texas' schools are nearly broke, thousands of children got booted off their health plan and the governor is all goggle-eyed for the idea of a $40-per-car tollway. So what dire public menace has one local senator's attention? The drive-through daiquiri.

As the Legislature wheels into Austin for another round of lawmaking merriment, state Sen. Jane Nelson wants to make sure that nobody in Texas can wheel up to a bar or store drive-through window and drive off with a fruity frozen cocktail to go.

Under Texas law, certain beer and wine bars can sell drinks to go in cups along with cans and bottles. A young entrepreneur from Amarillo has pioneered a statewide chain of 10 frozen wine daiquiri stands, the Eskimo Hut.

Texas isn't Louisiana, famous for drive-through rum daiquiris to go. The local Eskimo Hut on Vickery Boulevard in west Fort Worth sells tamer white-wine drinks in flavors such as Fuzzy Navel, Peach Colada and some extraterrestrial concoction named Martian Apricot.

5. things like this make me wonder why we even try
I don't know.

anyone stupid enough (yes, guns in bars is STUPID) to think that legislating guns in bars is a worthwhile use of taxpayer money and that having guns in bars is somehow good for society would probably never understand why we should pay for health care, education, and environmental protection.

8. Anybody remember the Daily Show episode about this
I especially liked how the state legislator who was opposing it had served in the marines while the GOP idiot who was proposing it played golf during vietnam.
