Would Alaska be on the table in an Obama v. McCain race?
Edited on Sun Feb-24-08 05:32 PM by bluestateguy
Do tell, Alaska DUers.

McCain opposes ANWR drilling. He lost the Alaska GOP caucus, while Obama won the Democratic caucus big time. Could Obama either win Alaska against McCain, or failing that, at least make McCain sweat for those 3 electoral votes?

1. I think McCain may sweat for the 3 votes
He came in last here, only getting something like 1800 votes out of 12,000 cast in the Republican presidential preference poll. The majority of Alaskan voters are registered Independent or nonaffiliated, so it's probably a toss-up which way they'll go. It may not be a sure thing for McCain.

2. plus Dem turnout should be high this year...
with the House and Senate possibly up for grabs for the first time since before I was born. I think that people will come out to vote against Don and Ted and those people are probably pretty sick of what's going on nationally too, and will vote D all the way down the line.

But who knows with our optical scanners counting votes what will happen. I just hope that we won't have 240% turn out to vote again this year, I couldn't take the lines last time.

9. McCain has also opposed drilling in ANWR
Which means the state GOP'ers won't see carrying the state for him as as much of a sacred necessity as normal.

They may even have to admit that a decent person could vote for the Democratic ticket.

(Maybe they'll write in Romney or Huckabee...wouldn't that be a hoot?)

3. I hope Obama crushes him
Im really tired of his 100 years in Iraq thing. You'd think a veteran would know you fight a war to win not to stay and get picked off by IED's. At least this veteran knows that

4. Definitely. The main thing is getting our statewide party leaders
to actually TRY to carry the state for the ticket for once.

They've basically surrendered in July or something for the last thirty-six years.

5. You got THAT right, Ken...
I've never seen such a bunch of losers. But this year may be different. I sure hope so.

6. You gotta think that
Bridge to nowhere guy and all the corruption will hurt the Republican party?
Or at least thats this outsiders thought.

7. The Republican party in Alaska has taken some serious hits
over the past couple of years. Bridge to Nowhere was just the start. You may or may not be aware that four Republican state legislators were brought up on federal corruption charges -- two are currently in prison serving five-year terms, a third has been convicted and is awaiting sentencing and the fourth will be tried soon. There are also several other investigations ongoing against current and former state reps and Don Young and Ted Stevens. Our new governor, Sarah Palin, although a Republican, is outside the "good old boys" network -- in fact, they generally hate her -- but she has an 85% approval rating among Alaskans, which pretty much tells you that it's not "business as usual" up here.
