I'm born/raised in Ketchikan, Alaska...any other fellow SE Alaskan's in here? Wheres the love?...:)...:) :toast:

on edit: whats been going on in SE Alaska, politic's wise? I dont' catch much news via the internet, and my mother never tells me anything. Last thing i remember hearing, was the Bridge To Nowhere article. And funny, I read it in NW Arkansas Gazette...

1. Petersond, I think most of us here are from Southcentral....
...and a few up in the Interior. I thought I saw someone here from Juneau not too long ago, but I can't think who it was.

9. sweet...
Kechikan has changed a lot since the mid 90's...the pulp mill closed in 95, and i swear, about 1/3 the town just upped and left. Ketchikan is totally a tourism spot now...with fish/timber behind it...its sorta sad...:(

10. Have a question or two for the Juneauites (present and former)
My longtime girlfriend and myself have been presented with the possibility of working in Juneau. A company is extremely interested in the both of us, and we're both itching to move on (and we love Alaska and visited Juneau before, but only for a day).

My question is, and you've probably figured it out by now: Can we swing it? We know housing is extremely tight and we'll have to downgrade our living standard a bit (we're not in a well-paying business, as a rule), but we don't want to dismiss the possibility out of hand. If we were to accept, it would be a huge raise for me but a slight cut in pay for her, and overall it would be a slight increase in what we bring home.

I'm a longtime Texan. She's a Pennsylvanian. She's used to long winters and a lot of rain, but I'm not, although I lived with her in Pittsburgh for four years. I'm sick of the Texas heat, though, and its general backward, conservative nature. I know Alaska is a red state, too, unfortunately, but I've always heard it's a little bit more moderate than say, the Deep South or Texas.

Without giving anything away in regard to salary, let's just say we wouldn't be able to afford a palace, more like a 2-bedroom condo with about half the square footage of our current home. As long as I live close to work, I don't think the winters would bother me that much, nor would the rain, considering the extreme dry climate at home.

So what do you think? Are we crazy? Can we do it? Do we have no idea what we're in for? We live near a big city now, but from what I understand, Juneau has a pretty nice cultural scene, too, for a place its size.

12. I don't know anything about cost of living in Juneau
but it's a beautiful little town. I know you and your girlfriend would love it in Alaska. My husband's an ex-Texan, and he wouldn't go back for anything.

15. I hate to be a buzzkilll
but when my parents die, heaven forbid, or if my wife's parents pass away, we are outta missouri, lickety split...my wife has a good career going for her at walmart, she is actually "Making" them do some good, and she has untapped potential there, and I don't want to hold her back. I do miss home sometimes, especially around xmas time. This past xmas, I was an alcoholic, big time, but I got over it. Its hard dealing with being away, from a place that I love, and hold so close to my heart...
