How much you want to bet...
...the Mobile Register has an editorial condemning Al Gore, if not tomorrow then certainly the next day?

1. don't get that paper here
But I understand they make the Birmingham News seem liberal by comparison.

The Tuscaloosa News is far from a a great paper, but I usually agree with their opinions. (Not when they backed Bill Pryor for the federal court, though.)

2. You have no idea...
...how bad it is.

In fact, here are today's letters to the editor:

Theory of evolution is flawed and intelligent design is only valid conclusion

Liberal media is ruining everything and FOX has the only true balance

Mainstream media is undermining Bush's success

The amount of stupidity and willful ignorance here is astounding and maddening and the Register cultivates such.

And, yes, I was wrong about their attack on Gore but am still shocked they passed on the opportunity. The only thing I can think of to explain it is that they were somehow convinced the content of the speech might spell trouble for the conservative viewpoint unless they ignored it.

4. Or this...
...pair of beauties:

Here, our moronic and crooked sheriff (he is a punchdrunk former pugilist so stupid he can barely spell his name and was caught stealing over $100,000 from the jail food fund two years ago but is too powerful to prosecute) voices the familiar litany of right wing poppycock about marijuana. Of course, there's a ghost writer for even this simple diatribe as the newspaper itself sought the sheriff out to solicit this Nancy Reagan-esque folderol. Reefer madness still at large

Then we have another guest column whereby the Register asks someone to tell us all that schools shouldn't teach classes on the Bible because it will be too objective.

5. What I've noticed...
...is that the Register seems to only print letters from the same small group of "liberals," some of which I know for a fact they doctor up before publication because I've seen them in their unedited form.

And, not to deride anyone too harshly, but a good deal of the reason they use the same few "left wing" folks over and over is because it's easy to make them look like crackpots.

The Mobile Register is an insidious entity that has done more harm to Mobile than can ever be recounted.

6. Agree, Register does edit letters but IMO not those under 150 words.
Liberal writers should keep letters short to avoid editing that distorts the author's intent.

8. Don't fool yourself...
...the Register tinkers with everything submitted. Length is no guarantee of anything and basically insures that the writer comes off as dealing with absolute pronouncements, sloganeering and regurgitation of points without exhibiting any of the rationale needed to exhibit cogency.

9. Everything? They've published several of my LTTE and not changed them
and my LTTE were critical of the Bush Administration and Republican controlled congress.

I guess you and I have had different experiences.

10. My experiences...
...come from having connections inside the Register and seeing letters written by readers that were submitted to more than one periodical. The way those letters changed before making the Register's pages (and the things I know about the editors and publisher and what they've said off the record) gives me pause about anything I read in that rag.

The Register is a tool of manipulation and little more. There's a reason the rest of the Newhouse chain calls it "The Cash Register."

11. I agree with you in general but, my comment was narrowly re LTTE by
liberal authors.

The Register does publish many more right-wing LTTE than those of liberal authors but if we liberals do not fight and write, the ring-wing automatically wins.
