Not a single GOP congressman has a Democratic opponent
Apparently no one, so far, is willing to challenge any of Alabama's Republican congressmen other than independents running against Bachus and Rogers:

Does anyone know of any Dems thinking about challenging any of these losers?

1. If I were 3 years older, I'ld take Rogers to the shed.
Unfortunately no one down here is so inclined.

2. opposition
Vivian Beckerle of Mobile is taking on Jo Bonner down in the south. Bonner is popular, but overall I don't think the Republican ticket will fare too well on the gulf coast, so Dems may benefit from increased turnout.

It would have been nice to find a top tier challenger to Rogers in 2006. That could have been a good pickup.

3. The party website is a few days behind
but so far Beckerle hasn't qualified. Hopefully she will, because she sounds like a good candidate.

4. I've been in contact with Vivian Beckerle.

She spoke to our South Baldwin Democrats club March 25. I believe she has qualified.
She's working on a website now.

"Former Mobile County Treasurer Vivian Beckerle said Monday that she plans to challenge U.S. Rep. Jo Bonner, R-Mobile, for southwest Alabama's 1st Congressional District seat.

"We just need a good Democrat running," Beckerle, a one-time Republican who now practices law in Mobile, said in a phone interview.

She added that she is putting together the paperwork and fees to qualify with the state party. A public kickoff has not yet been scheduled. Among the issues that Beckerle singled out as central to her campaign: the war in Iraq, the high price of gas and Republican-pushed tax cuts that she said primarily benefit the wealthy.

Party primaries will take place June 6, with the general election to follow Nov. 7. Bonner plans to seek a third two-year term, according to a spokeswoman.

Beckerle acknowledged the difficulty of competing in a district that has not elected a Democrat to Congress in more than 40 years, but she saw an opening in what she termed Republican "infighting," coupled with the ethical cloud that has enveloped such prominent figures as former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay of Texas.

"They're beginning to run from each other," she said.

5. I was hoping Joe Turnham would oppose Rogers
But, hey! Joe is heading the party now and seems to be doing a good job. I just wish he could have influenced some good Dems to challenge the pug incumbents!

8. Unfortunately
none of those folks have much of a realistic chance. But I'm glad they are running and giving people a choice. I just wish someone had jumped in to challenge Bachus. He's the only one getting a frree ride.

9. On the up side
the repubs aren't challenging Cramer or Davis. I guess they're too scared.
