(State) Senator says storms are punishment from God
http://www.al.com/news/birminghamnews/index.ssf?/base/news/112790008991370.xml&coll=2

"'New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast have always been known for gambling, sin and wickedness,' Erwin wrote this week in a column he distributes to news outlets. 'It is the kind of behavior that ultimately brings the judgement of God.'"

Read the article. It gets worse after that.

<cringe>

1. You gotta love the American system of government
Anybody can get elected.

If I thought God would literally punish me outright for my sins I wouldn't get out of bed in the morning.

3. What about the Texas Gulf/Sabine River/Lake Charles area?
What did they do to offend God? Vote for Democrats? Practising Catholicism? Produce oil for his cars?

5. It's funny how
they always know what god is pissed about.

Hey, maybe they were punishments from god. Maybe he does not care for our foreign policy.

Nahhhh, god hates sex and gambling more than he does the murder of thousands of innocents.

11. According to Senator Erwin's God, I better hope my neighbor
is not cheating on his wife or embezzling from his employer. I might get smashed by the collective punishment that comes down.

Oh, no! I just had a thought. My best friend lives across the street from a gay couple. Her house is probably toast soon.

:wow:

7. Kindly explain why churches weren't spared Senator.
Surely the God you worship would not be so careless as to punish his loyal servants, would he? And surely the poor were the object of your God's ire, because as we all know his son held the poor in such low regard.

The God I worship says we are ALL God's children.

Not some of us.

All of us.

INCLUDING the sinners.

You backwards-ass-hillbilly politician.

18. As Jon Stewart pointed out
Since the French Quarter was essentially spared, but all surrounding areas were badly damaged, God doesn't hate the gays but the gay-adjacent.

19. Looks like the Alabama GOP stands behind Erwin
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 08:33 AM by quaoar
This is from the Mobile Register:

"Alabama Republican Party chairman Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh refused to repudiate Sen. Erwin's mean-spirited column, instead insisting that he 'is a great senator and been a real leader.' "

Can you believe that there is actually a woman named Twinkle?

State Sen. Hank Erwin's recent comments about God's wrath striking the Gulf Coast have taught me a valuable lesson.

Being what I consider a conservative Republican, I have in the past gone into the voting booth and pulled a straight-party lever without much thought given to some of the candidates who happened to be running as Republicans. I fully believe I have some responsibility for inflicting Erwin on the people of Alabama, thereby giving Alabama another black eye.

Please forgive me. I will do better in the future.

And if anyone wants to hit my GD thread, it appears to be dying, but I think it's fairly important as being indicitive of the winds that are blowing:
