I hope Kerry brings up shrub's "Mulligan speech"
This goes beyond nerve and as of now the media isn't showing it as a saving face of his last debate. This is a talking point that has to get out to everyone.

6. A "Mulligan" is basically a "do-over".
Usually when playing a friendly game of whatever, if you have a bad shot (like in pool) or whiff the ball on the tee (golf), your buddy calls a Mulligan and you can do it over with no penalty.

Bush lost the debate, screwing it up badly. So to remedy that, 6 days later when his spinners have had a chance to go over everything, he gives a speech containing everything he WOULD have said in the debate, if he had an ounce of brains. A "Mulligan speech".

Edited on Wed Oct-06-04 01:28 PM by patrice
I'm sorry I don't know what that is. Can you tell me please?

Are you talking about "mexed missages", i.e a mixed up stew of words?

5. mulligan = golf term for "free shot" or "do over" or something like that

Basically, * is giving a speech, which seems to be solely to make up for his bad showing in the debate last week.

7. A mulligan in golf is a chance to hit again..
You hit a bad shot, you go mulligan..Bush took a mulligan today by attempting to correct his inept debate with a campaign speech..In order to get the media to cover it they described it as a major speech.. The whole thing was an I got my ass kicked on foreign policy so I will try to correct it without anyone questioning me and in front of a friendly audience..

giving us new information. That was hate time speech. Sorry loser that he is, the media will run it. I know others were as offended as I was. Just more lies.

11. Kerry must use the mulligan terminology Friday night
And repeat it if needed. Mock Bush by saying something like, "I'm sure they would also like a mulligan on planning this war in Iraq."

A mulligan is a wimpy do-over, typically on the first tee but often abused throughout a round of golf. Kerry should take advantage of this opportunity not only to needle Bush, but also to gain some traction among white middleaged golfers or that type. Make sure your terminology is perfect or the golf analogy will backfire and be mocked. I'm not sure if Kerry is a golfer.

It could be something like, "Golfers know all about mulligans. But mulligans are immediate. You tee up another ball and hit away, hopefully on the sweet spot -- straight and long. It took this president 6 full days to manufacture his mulligan, no doubt with as many consultants as the number of mistakes he made last Thursday night. If I am president you can count on one thing -- the truth from day one, no mulligans required."

12. Kerry Press Release re: Mulligan Speech
BUSH’S DEBATE MULLIGAN:
BUSH’S FOUR SYLLABLES: DES-PER-A-TION

John Kerry summed it up best in four words: more of the same. George Bush showed it in four syllables; des-per-a-tion. If there was any confusion about whether George Bush is honest with the American people, this speech confirms that he is not. This was a mulligan speech where the President tried to redo the debate from last week by giving a speech full of untruths he couldn’t say on stage with John Kerry because he knew Kerry would knock them down. George Bush needs to get real with the American people and start telling the truth.

DESPERATE LINES FOR DESPERATE TIMES:

-Bush claimed he has a plan for victory in Iraq, but Bush rushed to war without a plan; has no plan to win the peace. Kerry’s plan is a strategy to win.

-Bush claimed Kerry doesn’t understand post 9/11 world, but Bush took his eye off the war on terror and al-Qaeda.

-Bush got it wrong – Iraq is a terrorist haven NOW, while it was not before.

-Bush says problems with economy not his fault, but he hasn’t lived up to his own promises

-Bush says Kerry has supported higher taxes, but Kerry voted or cosponsored over 600 tax cuts, and Cheney supported higher taxes, including on Social Security.

-Bush attacked Kerry on the deficit, but Bush has taken us from a 5 trillion surplus to a $3 trillion deficit, and has no plan to pay for his trillions of promises.

-Bush attacked Kerry’s health care plan with a charge ABC has called not true.

-Bush claimed he’s tripled homeland security funding, but that is false.

15. Kerry can use both
Say mulligan first, then briefly explain in golf terms.

Mulligan has a very negative connotation, much more than do-over. Kerry must use it.

because the RNC made fun of Clinton because he would take "mulligans" when golfing. They used that fact to misportray Clinton as lacking in self-esteem and honesty

18. I forgot about that, it was pathetic
Clinton enjoyed golf the way it's supposed to be, a full 4+ hours and plenty of cigars and retries. The Bush method is to race through a round in 2 hours or so, especially poppy Bush but also the current jackass to a lesser degree.

Mulligan has a great ring to it and once people understand it's meaning (not hard to explain) it can take off.

btw, I do play golf..... LOL

19. Sounds like something a patrician New England millionaire would say
Can he sound like a normal person once and just say do-over? The majority of the people in this country don't play golf, especially a majority of those who aren't middle and upper class men.

20. that's what I'm saying
sure, Mulligan works, but why not use a folksier term that does not require specialized knowledge.

That being said, it's a good idea no matter how it's presented. Plus, do-over makes Dubya sound like a spoiled little kid.

25. I bet $20 that the idea for using that phrase came from
an upper or upper-middle class white man on the Kerry staff.

I would suggest weather a person has heard that term depends on where they live and what their social circles are like. It would be nice to use a phrase that is more commonly understood.

an elitist sport. I like the sound of the word, but, "do-over" would resonate better with some.

working mans sport where you can relax for an afternoon with friends driving from whole to whole enjoying a beer and laughs.
