In a NYT profile from a few days back (I don't have the link) that discussed Kerry's work and study habits, I found this anecdote to be quite revealing:
Kerry apparently soaks up information - that's what he's truly interested in and often will drive his staff nuts trying to learn all the details of an issue, even when more information is not included in his speeches. What I found particularly revealing was an incident the article described, where, when flying over West Virginia, a consultant was trying to describe to him the voting behavior and voting patterns of West Virginia residents. Kerry drove the guy nuts by never getting to the questions of voting patterns - instead, he spent the entire time asking more and more questions about the economic situation, the industrial situation and facts on the ground.
That to me is the hallmark of great leader.
