Crawford News email. We can run an ad........
I asked if we could run an ad. The AD I proposed was on the lines of The DU has heard of the Crawford Iconoclast newspapers recent decline of it's towns support and have therefore taken this ad out to let them know that we will do everything we can to make up for the loss of support from their home town citizens. DU has subscribed, and or just outright contributed to the newspaper because we believe in the freedom of speech and abhor anyone who would trample the fifth admendment in order to support such a (to be discussed)leader. The cost is $713.00 for a full page ad. I assume for one day. I think this is important but I'm not sure if getting it out in their faces without help. I am concerned about the Kerry campaigns support of this. Any ideas friends?

1. If 713 DUers put a dollar in
we could run a beautiful ad for at least one day!

Thanks for getting this info, dieharder:)

30. Hey Elwood!
Any music there?

As opposed to 'unkind and like them'!

On a mission like a rat terrier and a rat out in the open ground, huh?

Glad I'm not the rat. Go get 'em!

I feel like a frog surrounded by storks. Eight BC04 signs on the street and only my K/E sign. So I'm putting out 'accessory signs' under it. I rotate a new one every day. Very inflammatory, but true.

Just like that frog in the cartoon with the whole body disappeared in the mouth of the stork. Only the hind and front legs protrude from the mouth. The front legs/hands are wrapped about the throat of the stork choking the shit out of it. With the caption: Never give in, never give up, never say die!

8. I believe the paper is a weekly,
Edited on Sun Oct-03-04 03:43 PM by txindy
if that helps any with the decision to advertise. I think
it's an excellent idea. It may also help local advertisers
realize the paper will not fold up and go away when * goes down,
so they will have faith enough to keep their own businesses
advertising. They're just shooting themselves in the foot if they don't.

21. What about this...
Instead of an ad proclaiming DU's support, just an ad supporting freedom of speech and freedom of the press. How that's American and all.

Might make the locals think.

18. I agree with Wryter2000
A big, splashy ad from us would further antagonize the locals against the paper. Remember, that paper has to stay in business there in Crawford year after year without our support. The absolute best idea is for everyone to order a subscription, but the $45 is rather prohibitive, so why not take up a collection and see how many subscriptions we could get for the amount of money we collect. I have already subscribed, but would gladly kick in a few bucks so other people could have a subscription. I may be wrong, but I think an "in your face" ad would just hurt the newspaper in the long run.

This would be the nail in their coffin, proof to the locals that they are a commie rag. :(

I still think that people there really like their paper and that they will return to it. This is just the start of a plan, so I thank all opinions.

23. I really like the idea of a "neutral" ad simply supporting
free speech--awfully hard even for Repugs to argue with that.

Here's the e-mail I got in response to my query:

"You can subscribe by calling 254-675-3336 and paying by credit card or you can mail payment to:

The Lone Star Iconoclast
P.O. Box 420
Crawford, TX 76638

We've also set up a paypal account: lonestariconoclast@yahoo.com

The cost for one year is $45.00 and six months is $22.50.

Be sure to include your name and mailing address.

Thanks,
Melanie Milbradt
Marketing Director"

I donated $45, indicating that they can do what they think is best with it--donate a subscription (and yes, it's weekly) to a school/other institution, whatever.

I posted it upthread, an ad about freedom of speech, freedom of the press.

That, or we can have our own little fundraiser for the paper, either way they get the money.

33. I just emailed them and told them I wanted to subscribe for a year
but wanted the paper to go to someone in Crawford who maybe can't afford a subscription. Lord knows the L.A. Times overwhelms me as it is - I just finished trying to read the Sunday edition which is probably larger than a year's worth of Crawford's paper.

34. Think of the long term objectives.....
We need to be somewhat neutral. The long term objective here is to "supplement" their revenue until the local advertisers realize they can't shutter an independent paper just because they disagree with their editorial policy.

At some point those that "pulled" their support will return, but not if we inadvertently end up making the paper appear to be left leaning. Remember this is Crawford, Tx (bush or not... its still Texas) and for them to survive they can't piss off all the locals.
