Woody Allen on the 2004 election
Spiegel: Mr. Allen, do you see your President, George W. Bush as a comic or a tragic figure?
Allen: Bush himself is pretty comical. When you hear him speak, you often have to laugh out loud. If he were to be re-elected, that would be a tragedy.

Spiegel: Has life under Bush really become so horrible for Americans?
Allen: President Bush provides the perfect example that in a sea of tragedy, you occasionally find small islands of comedy, which refresh us with humor. It's like drinking an ice cold glass of water on a hot day. Then, you have the reality which we read about in the newspaper every day, which is really just horrible and atrocious.
There is no chocolate coating there. Suffering saves no one, we can't learn anything from that.

3. Ruby, I'd duck if I were you. I started a thread on Woody's opinion
of the election about two weeks ago ... when I got back on, there were something like 200 posts, most of them calling Woody a perv, and wondering why I would post anything a perv would say.

I posted because of the "islands of comedy" comment, which I thought was interesting.

But the flamewar was unbelievable. Just warnin' ya', Ruby. EVERYONE has an opinion on Woody/Mia/Soon-Yi.

6. oh crap! What would DUers say about Groucho if he was still around?
Groucho was sexist as could be but I still enjoy his movies, books etc so much-
and he was on Nixon's enemies list!
I always think of Woody as Groucho's heir.
