For about 18 months after 9/11, they kept working the phrase "popular wartime president" into articles on Bush. Then, following Bush's 2004 State of the Union address, they suddenly went slightly critical of him (this after trying to put the best spin on the thousands of protesters who greeted Bush during his state visit to the U.K.).
Now that they've got a Democratic candidate to bash, they're in full whorish mode. The Post hates both Al Gore and Bill Clinton and never misses a chance to bash either one, and now they've got Kerry to kick around. Donald Graham must be wetting his pants for joy.
The Post long ago lost its moral authority; if Nixon or McCarthy were alive today, they would turn a blind eye to dirty tricks. Now that Herblock and Mary McGrory are no longer with us, and Colman McCarthy was fired, there's precious little progressive commentary at the Post. They still print Harold Meyerson and E.J. Dionne, and even E.J. Dionne can be a knee-jerk Democrat-basher, though he claims to be on our side. David Broder will NEVER fill Mary McGrory's shoes -- not even in his wildest dreams.
However, there's nothing else for the Washington,D.C., area reader. Our only alternative is that candy-colored abomination called the Washington Times, and we know all about who runs that.
