Traitor. The word is spelled out in big, black letters. It's spray-painted over Kerry-Edwards campaign signs in neighborhoods all over town.

"I get frustrated. I'm angry that people would do that. It's my first amendment right. It's breaking the law," said Laura Burge, a Kerry campaign volunteer whose sign was vandalized. "No matter how you're voting, what you believe, you need to be able to say what you think."

Across town, Salle Hunter says someone stole her Kerry sign. She put it in front of her business along Grant Rd. Salle filed a police report when she noticed it was gone.

"It really toasted my biscuits," Hunter said. "I really feel violated that someone would come along and take my sign."

About 350 signs have been stolen, according to Panhandle for Kerry organizers, which met with Pensacola police Monday. The group has distributed nearly 3,400 signs.

Police said they would increase patrols and Panhandle for Kerry members planned to conduct neighborhood watches, said the group’s chairman, Jerry Holt.

"We have the availability, the funds and the will to replace every sign when we find out it’s missing," he said.

Pensacola resident Anne Bennett lost four Kerry signs from her front yard before putting out a homemade sign that read "Nice people don’t steal or vandalize." She hung her latest sign from a pine tree limb 15 feet in the air......"
