'Did you see Bush at the UN ! He was awesome! "
I heard this comment from an employee in a training class at work today. I'm sure he is not alone with those sentiments. But this is the direction we must choose on November 2nd. Screw the world! We don't need 'em! A very popular position amongst many Republicans. I hope it is not the position of most of America.

1. I would have said, "Bush was AWFUL!"
And he reminded me of Lt-Col George Armstrong Custer at Little Bighorn.

37. Custer led his men to Death and Disaster
that is where Bush is leading us.

Custer was also arrogant and racist which is one main reason why he ended up dead.

3. I actually forgot what was on
I was working and DUing and had the C-Span stream going and it was so dull I forgot that I was supposedly listening to the leader of the only remaining Superpower. You could hear a pin drop.

7. Oh I'll add-it was a speech for domestic consumption
Apparently it worked with that person you overheard.

It was meant (as everything is) for THE BASE, it is slipping away from him ever so gradually and he can't afford to lose a one.

It just makes me want to work harder to get the truth out. I think if the Rebs had their way, they would destroy the UN.

5. Welcome to DU!
If the repugs hate the UN so much, why doesn't Bush take the U.S. out of it? I never seem to get a straight answer from repugs for this.

9. There are too many of "those"people

in the UN.

TMO, the UN scares Bush folks because all the people don't look and think like they do. They seem to have no sense of a World View.

It is so sad that they don't understand.

That is why we must redouble our efforts to make this World a better place for our children.

14. Sadly, it is the position of most Americans when there's a GOP prez
Foreign policy and dealing with complicated issues like how do we use a big fat international do-little bureaucracy like the UN to effectively advance the causes of world peace and the rule of international law are issues on which the mass of citizens prefer to follow their leaders. Since this country is pretty free of death squads and (not counting the times when foreign dictators visit Disneyland for a much needed vacation), we don't conceive of the wealth of good the UN can and should do in the world.

That's why, despite its inefficiency, we really do need to support the UN. It represents the best course of action for promoting international law and human rights. It takes real leadership to see this need rather than to simply demogogue on the issue and rile up people's suspicions about this foreign entity that for some abstract reason we have to fund. When we have a president who uses the UN to advance real American causes like freedom and opportunity and workers' rights and women's rights, people begrudgingly get behind the UN. When we have a cynical propagandist trying to bluff his way into a second term, people follow their leader then too and start to despise the joint.

The UN is imperfect, but it's needed.

23. Right. And for some Americans, that's fine with them
They fear and therefore hate anybody who is different from them.

It's interesting that Republican policies - which keep people uneducated, overworked, in poor health, and vulnerable to any huckster who promises them the moon - produce masses of Republican voters.

26. What was your response?
Sounded like an opportunity to help out the cause of rationality to me. Of course, you had to reply in a very smooth yet critical way.

We need to know in advance what we'll do or say when such situations come up in OUR lives. They most assuredly will.

My instinct is to ask a question. "Really? What did he say? Hmmmm. What worries me about that is . . . "

30. Bush is a local politician
He has no concept of what role a world statesman should have in taking the lead. He's wrapped up in Texas politics and that's what interests him. Arrogance and beligerance is part of the image he tries to cultivate because it plays well in NASCAR/dueling banjo land.

36. Bush gave a speech designed for the Lubbock TX Womens' GOP Auxiliary
That's pretty much it - arrogant, swaggering, self-righteous and oozing sanctimonious bullshit. The only thing that made it all worthwhile was the solid 3-second round of applause he got at the end.

Yeah, way to draw allies from around the world to our side in the grinding fight of good vs. evil, Chimpo.
