Steele to Republicans Who Support Obama: ‘We’ll Come After You’

November 05, 2009 1:03 PM

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: RNC Chairman Michael Steele has been endorsing a “big tent” approach to recruiting candidates for 2010, emphasizing the need to find candidates who fit the needs of individual districts.

But on ABCNews.com’s “Top Line” today, Steele made clear there are limits to how far candidates can push the party’s limits.

Asked if he’d be comfortable with Republican candidates in 2010 who supported President Obama’s stimulus package, or his push to overhaul health care, Steele said:

“Well I’m gonna tell you honestly, that’s where the line gets a little bit tricky. And you saw in the House and in the Senate that there are ramifications, because that goes against a core principle. And trust me, you’re assuming that people want to have bloated debt, government expenditures and growth into their lives -- they don’t. That’s a talking point out of the DNC.”

“People aren’t buying that. So candidates who live in moderate to slightly liberal districts have got to walk a little bit carefully here, because you do not want to put yourself in a position where you’re crossing that line on conservative principles, fiscal principles, because we’ll come after you,” Steele continued.

“You’re gonna find yourself in a very tough hole if you’re arguing for the president’s stimulus plan or Nancy Pelosi’s health plan. There’s no justification for growing the size of government the way this administration and this Congress wants to do it.”

Steele didn’t mention any candidates by name. But the comments could be interpreted as a warning shot aimed at Republicans who have voiced support for the stimulus -- like Gov. Charlie Crist, R-Fla., who’s running for governor next year in a competitive primary -- or who, like Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, are supporting health care reform efforts.

1. Steele and the baggers are going to make it so easy to claim you're a Repug
because it's so easy for them ... when they're out of power, they get the ear of the "liberal media" for all their whining about how everything which was done was wrong, and that it would really have been much better if they were put into office ... despite the fact that they had the reins in driving the economy over the cliff ...

2. End bipartisanship efforts now
The Democratic party's big recurring mistake is compromising our stated goals and consensus platforms in the name of bipartisanship.

You will never find middle ground when the group you are trying to accommodate can't be satisfied as long as you retain any ground.

I think we should kick 'em to the curb and leave 'em in the dust. Who needs 'em?

5. Makes absolutely no sense.....
..... the candidates who moved right lost Tuesday night and the ones who moved middle, who sounded Obama-esque won. I dont get it.

But perhaps "logic" is a trait foreign to the GOP.

9. SO 20% of the country
even tho they spend all their time screaming and yelling and posting racist and hateful signs can vote democrats out of office. At this time I think that 20% might even drop a little. I can not believe this small minority could make the difference in the votes.

They are making a difference in the coverage that is given to both parties in the MSM. Republicans especially the hate group branch are now getting 24/7 preferred coverage on CNN. MSNBC is the only media network out there that tells both sides of the story.

NO WONDER TED TURNER SAID HE WANTED CNN BACK.

10. What about the voters?
I don't see them anywhere in Steele's equation.

12. wonder how they are going to feel if we start cutting the pentagon budget
not that i think we will, necessarily, but i still have some hope for this hope thing. i trust we will try to balance the budget once things straighten out some, and obama has shown that he is at least willing to occasionally kill a boondoggle here and there. so, if we really do target pentagon waste in the later years here, will they applaud us for shrinking the deficit? somehow i doubt it.
