Serial GOP: Media loves repeated Republican protester

On September 17, The Drudge Report home page featured a September 16 Associated Press photo of a 3-year-old girl, Sophia Parlock, holding a ripped Bush-Cheney '04 sign and crying as she sits on her father's shoulders. Drudge captioned the photo: "GIRL CRIES AFTER BUSH/CHENEY SIGN RIPPED BY THUGS...". Later that day, The Washington Times published an interview with the Parlock family, whom the paper described as "proudly patriotic."

As The Washington Times reported on September 17:

"They just pounced on us," said Phil Parlock, who took his 11-year-old son, Alex, and 3-year-old daughter, Sophia, to the Democratic rally at Tri-State Airport in Huntington, W.Va.

Sophia became briefly famous yesterday when an Associated Press photo showing her in tears after Democrats tore her sign to pieces was posted on Matt Drudge's Web site, www.drudgereport.com.

"She was crying; they were pushing and shoving her," said Mr. Parlock, a Huntington real estate agent. "She was scared."

3. When does the press start piling on the Wash Times about their "source"
providing them bogus information?

Oh, that's right. They only do that when the story hurts Bush...

a newbie posted the picture here last night before drudge even picked it up and we began speculating in that thread that this was corrupt.

I guess it makes us more effective, though.

12. Yes - this is exactly how the Freepers do it -
they do the dirty work and then turn it over to the press.

The media no longer think they're supposed to do any investigative work. They're too busy lolling around their shiny new sets interviewing each other about their opinions. That's why the right wing echo chamber is so effective - they pull together huge reams of info - much of it fake, but plenty of it - and then lay it all out for the lazy press who, glad to have a story to report, happily repeat it almost verbatim.

We need to do a better job in gathering and presenting info to the press - DU and Rising Hegemon did a hell of a job on this one. Of course, we don't have the entree to give it directly to the mainstream press in order to have them rush to press with it, but Media Matters gets it out there and gives it much more weight.

18. we have a stove pipe
It's the big blogs.

When DU finds the story, we blast it to the bigger blogs. KOS, Digby, Talking Points (although he's slower to pick things up) etc.

MSNBC picks things up from the big blogs.

It can be done in hours. We forced the resignation of a Bush campaign advisor in hours.

19. no,
EthanAllenVt posted it here last night in a thread titled "we don't need this shit" or something like that.

in fact, i noted in that thread that drudge will now probably post the pic on his website.

at the time EthanAllenVt posted the pic here, it only had been rated by like some 20 people.

21. Yeah. It started with logic. "This cannot be a true story."
And the facts fell into place.

This one really was very obvious.

14. Media Matters is such a great site!
Every Democrat who cares about the problems with the media should visit the site regularly.

This guy is using his kids to try to help Bush - maybe child protective services should pay him a visit.

22. yes, he is truly sincere
... I could see that when he was on MSNBC last week (I think it was MSNBC); he held his own against whoever-the-heck it was, and made sure to make his point. Good for him!

But about this Parlock creature - the eyewitness at that event says he PROVOKED the whole encounter. She was adamant, and was backed up by other people who knew him who agreed that provocation is this man's MO. This WT article, and that USNews piece about Bush sending her another sign (signed by Barney, no less) makes me hurl.
