1. It's one of those "moral victories"
You now the kind where you get to make yourself feel all good inside, but in the end, the other candidate actually got more votes and actually gets to hold the office.

The analogous case for us was Paul Hackett's run in the Ohio-2nd special election in 2005.

3. and in a couple of weeks when Owens joins the blue dogs, some here will be demanding
he be "primaried" by a more progressive Democrat next year.

I for one am very happy to have Owens elected and Hoffman defeated, even if Owens ends up being a blue dog. But its a safe prediction here that sometime in the next year someone on DU will say we'd have been better off if Hoffman had won.

4. i should add that the 23rd is far from being one of the reddest districts in the US
Obama actually captured this district in 2008 and both Kerry and Gore managed to get in the upper 40 percent range. McHugh, the repub that stepped down, was not a fundie flamethrower nor was his repub predecessor.

Solidly red -- yes (but moving toward purple).
One of the reddest districts in the US -- not even close.

I love political geography and political history. So, something seemed out of line when I recently read diaries on several sites regarding the soon-to-be vacancy of New York's 23rd Congressional District, made possible by the appointment of John McHugh to become Secretary of the Army -- several diaries mentioned that the district hasn't been represented by a Democrat in a quarter century or so. Perhaps parts of the district haven't elected a Democrat in 25 or so years, but it seemed to me that most of the district hasn't been Democratic-held since much earlier times. I decided to do a little research.
