14. I am in St. Lawrence County. Numbers are starting to come in for us
and so far Owens has a little under 700 lead! I am holding my breath! We had some trouble here in the county earlier with Hoffman supporters chanting at people going in to the polls. They had Hoffman stickers all over them and they were going on about Pro-Life. Police were called but I don't have all the particulars about it as yet nor do I know what town they were in.

TPMDC:

Voting Machine Breakdowns May Delay Results In NY-23

Voting machine malfunctions may delay election results from four towns in New York's 23rd district, reports the Johnson News Service.

The breakdowns, in Louisville, Waddington, Rossie and Clare, happened earlier today on new voting machines, according to the St. Lawrence County Board of Elections deputy commissioner.

And in Fulton County, results won't be posted online and likely won't be available to the media until tomorrow.

35. FWIW.. we're close to Waddington. The machines we used
are probably the same as there. They're new machines that use a large (legal size) paper ballot that you will out and is scanned in. It's very fussy and will spit back out a ballot if the boxes aren't filled in all the way. If the scanning machines break down the ballots can still be counted.. they'll just have to be counted by hand.

62. This is a test for the Republican Party. They should have run away with this district.
Instead, they are fighting to keep pace with a Democrat in a decidedly conservative district! That's amazing. Even if they win, the fact that they are a fractured party says so much about their direction. Do they want Sarah Palin to lead their fight? Or, do they want a more pragmatic, mainstream Republican to be their leader? We'll see Hoffman is not a Repuke. He's a Sarah Palin sycophant. We'll see what happens.

St. Lawrence is basically purple.

For specifics all I can speak to is my own experience and the majority of Republicans I've met up here are what I would call "Ike" types and fairly moderate. There's also a decent Dem population partially thanks to the colleges we have up here.

If you compare this to the above map perhaps it will help.

ETA: FWIW Hamilton is the fairly solid red in the upper middle and they're an area that hasn't come in yet. St, Lawrence where I am is the deeper purple at the top.

75. NY-23: Watertown Mayor: ‘It’s Over’

By David Weigel 11/3/09 10:50 PM
SARANAC LAKE, N.Y. – I caught Watertown, N.Y., Mayor Jeff Graham, who endorsed NY-23 Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman this weekend, looking very glum at Hoffman’s election party. I asked him what happened in Jefferson County, where Watertown is located, and where Democrat Bill Owens is leading the vote.

“We lost,” said Graham. “The Scozzafava endorsement, the endorsement of Owens–I mean, they roughed Hoffman up.”

Could Hoffman still pull out a win? Graham grimaced. “It’s over.”

77. How fun it would be if the 4 or 5 percent Scozzafava winds up with is
the difference in the amount Hoffman loses to Owens by.

It would be interesting to hook into a live blog from the Hoffman HQ site to see if people are still confident, or looking anxious, or drunk as skunks and draped over the chairs.

social and some economic issues than to have another Blue Dog Democrat who is not. It's not worth Owens winning the seat is he's not going to be marginally more progressive than she.

Yes, it's sad that there were so many that voted for Hoffman but IMO the fact that this area elected the first Dem in decades says a lot more about this area then one might think. It shows that the trend I've noticed may be accurate and this area is growing less conservative, less straight party Republican and more left... this is a very good thing and hopefully will continue. :)

124. From Newzjunky
As the results from the voting machines in the 11 counties of NY-23 start rolling in after the polls close at 9 p.m. tonight, keep this number in mind: 10,226.

That's the number of paper ballots that were sent out in the special election to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. John McHugh, according to a Democratic operative charged with keeping tabs on this very important information.

Of that, just over half - 5,411 - have come in.

Of the rest, the military and special federal ballots (those given to ex-pats) are due back on Nov. 16. The deadline for the rest is Nov. 10.

Unless the margin of victory for either Democratic candidate Bill Owens or Conservative nominee Doug Hoffman is 8,000 to 9,000, we're headed for a massive recount a la NY-20.

The military ballots total somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,660 (I'm offering the grain of salt here because there are 11 county boards of elections and they're all delivering their own numbers, so there's a margin of error here).

I'm assuming most of those military ballots come from Ft. Drum, which is located in Jefferson County. That's Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava's stronghold, and remember: The paper went out before this became a two-man race.

There have even been some anecdotal reports of 23rd CD residents coming in to boards of elections and demanding their absentee ballots back since Scozzafava dropped out of the race and endorsed Owens. In other words: They're Scozzafava voters who have reconsidered.

The absentees break down as follows:

- 2,191 Jefferson County. (Scozzafava country).
- 1,583 Clinton County. (Owens country).
- 1,746 Oswego County. (Has been trending Democratic).
- 1,730 St. Lawrence County. (Has been trending Democratic)
- 874 Franklin County.
- 749 Essex County. (Hoffman country).
- 548 Lewis County.
- 406 Fulton County.
- 323 Lewis County.
- 230 Oneida County.
- 76 Madison County.
