Michelle Obama Just Gets Better and Better

Posted on Nov 2, 2009

The first lady entered the White House with no public agenda and with promises to focus on her children, but a year in, she has already made an impact. Her latest project is a mentoring program meant to inspire local girls by giving them access to some of the White House’s powerful women.

The Washington Post reports that unlike Michelle’s vegetable garden (inspired by food activist and hero Alice Waters) and her other important projects, this one is deeply personal:

Obama said she became interested in the power of mentoring as a corporate lawyer in Chicago. Her office, she said, was on the 47th floor of a downtown building and her windows faced south towards her old neighborhood. Kids who were just as smart and capable as she was missed out on opportunities and successes “by a hair,” she said.

And then she got a bit verklempt. “We’ve got the most powerful seat in the land to be a bridge-builder,” she told the girls, her eyes tearing and voice cracking. “And I’m so excited and touched and moved to have you all here…. I can get emotional.”

Gallup puts Michelle Obama’s favorable rating at 61 percent—higher than her husband’s.

The White House is also planning a mentor program for boys.

6. In 2004 while campaigning Barack was praised
by all of us that met him here in SI. Each time he was praised he would tell us that we should meet his wife, she was the better than him. The older ladies that had been to Chicago and had met her also said "If you like him, you should meet his wife. Michelle is even more likable/better than he is." They all loved Barack but loved Michelle more. Well, I couldn't make the trip to Chicago and she never came to SI with Barack so I didn't know if they were right or not but I knew that for me Barack Obama was the man I wanted to vote for. Fast forward to 2008 and I saw Michelle speak live on TV and I saw what Barack and those women were talking about when they spoke of this woman. Michelle Obama did come across as likable and the real thing.

In 2004, unless you were an idiot, you voted for Barack for the Illinois Senate. In 2008 some people down here who were still unsure of Barack for president were won over by Michelle. "She knows what it feels like to be us." They would say. "She knows what it feels like to be working class."

17. Yep. I'm in awe of her yet not intimidated by her.
She's like someone you might know, except she's like almost perfect. But she's modest and has a generous spirit. What a gem!!!

19. Mentoring is an action, not just empty rhetoric.
I encourage everyone here to become a mentor too. It's a big deal to kids.

21. The morning after the inauguration, Michelle opened the doors of the White House
to many who had been told there would be no visitors allowed that day. "Let them in," she said. After a very long night of endless balls, she awoke early and welcomed those people into their home. I knew at that moment that she was going to be a very special First Lady.

She exemplifies grace and kindness.
