Kevin Jennings is a true civil rights hero. I am a contemporary of Kevin's. I graduated college in 1990 while he graduated in 1986 so I was a freshman in high school while he would have been a senior. Growing up in a small town back in the 1980's as a gay kid was tough. I felt totally alone. I knew of no gay teachers. I knew of no gay kids. Sure I saw a gay person or two on tv. I had an ex gay living across the street. I also had sex a time or two but I never saw a gay doctor, lawyer, or even a gay auto worker. Because of Kevin's work gay kids, even those in small towns, don't have to grow up that way. Kevin invented gay straight alliances. Those clubs let gay kids know, even those with religiously conservative parents, that there are gay kids and adults in the world. They aren't alone.
The religious right is targetting Kevin Jennings precisely because of his civil rights work. Precisely because he may prevent kids like me from feeling so alone they wish to kill themselves he is being targetted. It doesn't get simplier than that. If we don't save him, we aren't worth saving.
