"Outrage" Documentary: Activists Outing Gay Conservatives

First Posted: 04-28-09 04:01 PM | Updated: 05-29-09 05:12 AM

"Outrage," a new documentary from filmmaker Kirby Dick, takes issue with the secret lives of closeted gay politicians -- especially conservative Republicans who outwardly oppose gay rights.

The film, which premiered last week at the Tribeca Film Festival, features tell-alls from men who say they've had relationships with various Republicans, including Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Bush strategist Ken Mehlman and former Senator Larry Craig.

According to Magnolia Pictures, "Outrage" is a "searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians with appalling gay rights voting records who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to."

In the documentary, Dick lambastes the mainstream media for not better investigating the politicians' "hypocrisy" and double lives. He told New York magazine that the film explores "the issues surrounding closeted politicians and their hypocrisy in voting anti-gay -- and how these people have harmed millions of Americans for many years."

"Outrage" premieres May 8 in five cities, including Washington, D.C.

and the names of the guilty, which included Ed Koch, are a who's who in American politics.

Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch Outraged over Outrage

Ed Koch is steamed over the new Kirby Dick documentary Outrage, which exposes closeted politicians who work against gay rights. But he's not pissed because it says he's gay, but because he says the film defiles his record (the film claims his record on AIDS and gay rights was virtually nonexistent).

Says Koch to Page 6: "It's a (bleep)ing outrage. Bella Abzug and I, in the early '70s, introduced in Congress a bill that would outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation...And when we later said the law applied to contractors doing business with the city, the Catholic Church and the Salvation Army sued me. In 1984, I was the first mayor to march in the Gay Pride Parade. I was the first mayor to appoint openly gay judges."

Koch recently told the NYT it's unacceptable to ask if he's gay, and still won't say if he is.

8. And let's not forget Lindsey Graham, Joe Lieberman's best warmongering buddy

At 52, the life-long bachelor has been fodder for such rumors for years, but with the resignation of Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho — the anti-gay politician who pled guilty to disorderly conduct after allegedly soliciting sex in an airport men's room — the internet is abuzz over who's next, and they're dying to know what's going on in Graham's bedroom. Is it the latest grasp for the light switch in South Carolina's powerful political closet? Or the inevitable labeling of "closet-clinging self-hater" that befalls any content bachelor?

Graham isn't the first South Carolina politician to face such questions. While other names are omitted from this story because they aren't at the center of national speculation (thank your lucky chinos, boys) they've reached some of the most influential seats in state politics.

13. I'm of the mind that unless you have proof, this is character assassination.
And while that was cute back in Junior High, it's frankly pathetic now. Furthermore, unless this leads to something constructive, I fail to see what crap like this achieves. Do you actually think that the voters in these districts won't merely replace these people with equally conservative Congressmen and Senators. Or are all of them in the closet too? This is beneath us, and if it isn't then one ought to question if we stand for anything other than destroying our opposition. If that's all we stand for, then there is less difference between them and us than we'd probably like to admit.

15. You can't assassinate the character of people that have no character
and you are falling into the well known trap of playing according to Hoyle a game whose only rule is to beat the opposition into a pulp.

If my wonderful Congressman Andre Carson, who was just honored yesterday by Indiana Stonewall Democrats for his work in fighting for our rights, were a rightwinger pushing an anti-LGBT agenda, and we were to find out that he hung around Brothers (a local gay hangout), you bet we would be exposing his ass.

17. If the only point of this is to beat the opposition to a pulp, then why bother with rules at all?
Bullets are considerably cheaper than films, and terror renders far better short-term results than satire.

19. Oh, the faux outrage! We have been beaten to a pulp by the rightwing. No more!
We should strike at them with the same ferocity that they used to deny us our rights.

25. Unlike you, I have watched the film and they have definitive proof
on pretty much everyone they mention. They start with Craig, enough said. Then they move on to McGreevey, again enough said. Then they move onto Koch who has all but admitted it. Then a conservative activist who did admit it and is working now for Equality NC. Finally Christ and Melhman the only two I think there is any doubt about at all and for them they have, on the record interviews with several male ex lovers.
