Greenwald Makes A Strong Argument For Not Delaying Action On DADT

Glenn Greenwald
Monday Oct. 12, 2009

Gay issues, the "Fringe Left" and the liberal veal pen

...Reality: "The ban on openly gay men and women in the military should be repealed, American voters say 56 - 37 percent" and "Voters reject 58 - 35 percent, including 56 - 39 percent in military households, the argument that allowing openly gay men and women to serve would be divisive . . . " and "57% of Americans support the idea of allowing gays and lesbians to enter into civil unions or domestic partnerships to protect their rights." Does this look "closely divided" to you?

It's just isn't 1993 any longer. If Democrats can't deliver on basic issues with control of the White House, huge majorities in Congress and popular support, what can they do? Other than http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2009/10/12/MNH31A487H.DTL">this and http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/24/us/politics/24detain.html?hp">this?

UPDATE II: As for the "you-have-to-wait" justification, here's the time-line of the Democratic Party mentality on all such matters:

2004-2006: "You have to wait until we win a Congressional majority in the 2006 midterms."

2006-2008: "You have to wait until we win the White House in 2008."

January-May, 2009: "You have to wait until we have a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate."

Currently: "You have to wait until after the 2010 midterms so we preserve our majority" or "you have to wait until Obama is safely re-elected in 2012."

Once Obama is safely re-elected, it will be: "you have to wait so you don't jeopardize the 2014 midterms." That's the mentality that produces majority power which exists for no real purpose but to perpetuate itself.

1. "you have to wait until Obama is safely re-elected in 2012."
Who said that?

His strong case is speculation?

4. "He is very good at sourcing" So why aren't the sources in the article?
Does he have a source for the 2014 speculation?

8.  "He is very good at sourcing" You know him so well. Speaking of clowns
You stated that he made a strong case, which includes two points that are purely speculation.

Maybe instead of making stuff up to slight Obama, maybe Greenwald can call on Congress to act now.

20. Ain't that the truth. This is the shit that pisses me off with the goddaamned left.
They Obama to be the Bush of the left. They want Obama to ignore Congress and go unilateral and make up fake letters to get shit done. That's what they fuckin' want. I can't fuckin' stand it. GG does it a lot...but DUers do it all the damned time. Because Bush ran amok and did what he wanted, they want Obama to do the same. Ignore the fact that there are three branches so that when things are done judicially---it's Obama. If things are done legislatively---it's Obama. No. They forget that the legislative branch has specific duties and those people have specific powers that the President doesn't have....he doesn't vote on laws----he can veto them after the fact. But some clowns....man.

9. Write your congress peeps to grow a spine and pass legislation ending DADT
DADT should be repealed, but Congress needs to "own it" with legislation that takes away the legislation they put in place.

Start here:

unfortunately too many on DU don't seem to know this, HR 1283 the Military Readiness Act, people really should be calling members of the Armed Services Committee.

14. Then the constituents should bully Congress since they make the laws.
I'm tired of this stress on Obama. Obama stood by and said he's working with Congress and mentioned the bill. He's putting as much pressue as he can alongsde getting climate change and health care underway. He doesn't control Congress since they have a great deal of power themselves. So everyone should get on the ass of their Congress elected official. That's where the ultimate push for change is. If people can't realize how important they are and who has distinct power over LAWS that are enacted...then nothing can ever get done.
