Nobel Peace Prize to Obama greeted with praise, high hopes at Vatican

By Carol Glatz
Catholic News Service

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- News that U.S. President Barack Obama had been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize was met with high hopes from the Vatican spokesman.

Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi (Director of the Vatican's Press Office) told journalists Oct. 9 that the news "was greeted with appreciation at the Vatican in light of the president's demonstrated commitment to promoting peace on an international level and, in particular, in recently promoting nuclear disarmament."

"It is hoped that this very important recognition would offer greater encouragement for such a difficult but fundamental dedication to the future of humanity so that it may bring about the desired results," he said in a written statement.

Oops! Earplugs may be required when this hits the fundie make-believe Catholic right-wingers. Mel Gibson may even issue a fatwa against B-16.

1. Great find. Thanks for sharing this with us. This won't get the same kind of..
attention that Glenn Greenwald gets, of course.

12. Gibson's not a mainline Catholic.
He's part of an offshoot that rejects Vatican II.

16. The Pope is nicer to President Obama
than some of the crazies that had a fit when he spoke at Notre Dame. I think that the Pope and President could actually have some interesting conversations since everything the Pope has written about Obama has been positive even during the primaries, which the American Bishops ignored.

I think this is very fascinating and you may already know that President Obama spoke about today's ceremony on TV in Hawaii and online papers worldwide.

Today, October 11th, 2009 is the formal Canonization of Jesuit priest, Father Damien as a Saint by the Pope. Father Damien, born in Belgium, spent many years isolated with the Lepers in Hawaii even though he knew that he would die. Robert Louis Stevenson defended Father Damien when some religious tried to slander him since at that time they really didn't know what caused Hansen's Disease (Leprosy) and thought it might be STD related.
