Any Mt. Vernon, WA (or nearby) residents here?
Apparently the mayor of the city is planning to award Glenn Beck the key to the city on Saturday. I've signed a petition to help keep this from happening, and it's being presented at a city council meeting tomorrow night. I know it probably won't do a whole lot of good. I just wonder why it's even happening. Any local residents who can shed some more light on this, or who will be attending any local demonstrations?

1. I will be there! Armed, too!
I am looking for catchy sayings for my protest posters. Any ideas?

5. Good luck with that
I wish I had the pleasure of meeting more progressive people when I lived there.

2. Seattle here. Nobody much cares what the hicks up there do....
Mt. Vernon is simply a gas station on the way to Vancouver (or Bellingham) for the rest of us.

There are pretty tulips in that area, though.

6. That's definitely a good way to look at it.
I just wondered what special kinship the mayor of that town has with Blech that he'd want to give him the key to the city. It's stupid.

10. Beck grew up here and he and the mayor are pals.
Strange, though, because I have hung out with the mayor on several occasions, and he is NOTHING like Beck at all.

9. Easy with the disparaging comments.
Perhaps if you came down from your emerald tower and mingled with the commoners you would see that Mount Vernon, while a little more than a gas stop, has fewer hicks than you think. Must be nice to be sooo perfect......

12. Yes the tulips are beautiful
that is about the only nice comment I have about that town. Oh and they have a really nice co-op market downtown.

I know there are some good progressives there but I think they are outnumbered by the mouth breathers. I wish them luck with their protest. The last demonstration I witnessed there was a tea party. A tea party with all sorts of racist vile signs fit for good repigs.

3. There have been several posts about this.
I read that there will be protests, including protests by national groups like the NAACP.

If you can show up to demonstrate peacefully, do it.

I am not anywhere close to there, but I live in such a red area of this blue state that I wouldn't be surprised if one of the towns around here pulled something equally disgusting. The right wingnuts make me :puke:

4. That sucks. :(
I live in Olympia, but even I'm shocked at the number of Republicans and Dino Rossi stickers and signs there were around here during the election. And this health care debate has brought them all out of the woodwork.

7. Nothing but hicks and tulips up there
Edited on Tue Sep-22-09 06:07 PM by DebbieCDC
Apparently BecKKK lived there as a kid and that's where he first got "interested" in being on the radio. I'll stay in the friendlier confines of Seattle on Saturday I think.

On edit: I've signed the online petitions too. The Young Dems have been holding street corner protests too. We'll have to see what happens at this council meeting.

8. Ohhh... well that explains it, I guess.
I don't know if I'll be able to make it up to the protests this weekend, but I sure hope that they have a good turnout, and I wish them the best.

17. Speaking as a Mt. Baker area hick,
there is no way that Seattle is friendlier than Whatcom county. NO freakin' way.

19. I'm in Marysville
I don't want the crazy little prick in my state either.

I see Seattle has checked in with nasty comments about the outlaying areas. Snohomish county usually goes for the democrats except for that unfortunate incident a few years ago when Snohomish county voted oddly for Rossi.

20. I live in Leavenworth, WA
and don't want that dude anywhere near my state...spent a great beautiful day in Seattle today...

funny someone was talking about Rossi signs, i passed a car in seattle today with a mccain/palin sign...ugh!!!!!!!!

Hugh Rossi signs were in my area but us dems here fought for our governor and she won!! And this time we had huge signs for her too, didn't happen in 2004.

I am surrounded though in my acre in the country, republicans all around me. I pass my neighbor listening to Rush all the time, I want to gag. I told my husband we should get outdoor speakers and play Ed Schultz real loud.
