Radical, Racist Signs Featured At 9/12 March

This morning on ABC’s Good Morning America, Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) embraced the protesters at today’s 9/12 March in Washington, DC, saying that he was “glad they’re here to take back their country.” He characterized the attendees as nonpartisan, adding that “it’s not about President Obama. It’s not about the Democrats.” Several other Republican lawmakers, including Reps. Tom Price (GA), Mike Pence (IN), Marsha Blackburn (T), and Phil Gingrey (GA) planned to attend and speak at the event.

Members of ThinkProgress attended today’s march and the signs carried by these protesters were hardly nonpartisan — and were often racist, radical portrayals of Obama, despite DeMint’s claim. Some examples of what we saw:





In an interview with the Washington Independent, DeMint claimed that the attendees at the march were “a cross-section of the population.” When it was pointed out to him that almost everyone there was white, DeMint simply said, “It’s probably just the time and organization and the media that promoted it.”

Mark McKinnon, a former adviser to Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) presidential campaign, has warned conservatives from embracing events like the 9/12 March. “It’s bad for Republicans because in the absence of any real leadership, the freaks fill the void and define the party,” McKinnon said.

At any rate, the ALL/healthcare nexus mostly seems to me to be emblematic of the knee-jerk quality of the whole thing. As we know, back in November most people voted for Barack Obama. Most people voted for a Democratic House candidate. And most people voted for a Democratic Senate candidate. Today, most people prefer Obama’s approach to the approach of congressional Republicans. But this is a very large country. And a large minority of the population is out of step with the views of the minority. You’ve got your anti-abortion guys, your tenthers, your birthers, your Medicare-hating congressmen, etc. Something called the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights is among the sponsors of the rally.

6. I think we have something to fear here.

The people on the right are not just going about business as usual. They're getting more radical all the time. I'm beginning to worry about where all of this is headed. The Nazis started out in very similar fashion, a movement that represented itself as a movement for the people, a very narrowly defined group of people, in the name of traditional patriotism and against anything and anyone who didn't look and act like them. Sound familiar? They started out just using hateful rhetoric and eventually it just snowballed.

The primary red flag for me is what those on the right are willing to accept as fact. Republican voters are believing anything their elected representatives tell them and those representatives tell them whatever it takes to get those people fired up and to keep the Republicans in power. There can be a tipping point when they start stepping over the line and the people follow just like when the Nazis came to power in Germany, and then it's too late. The sh it will hit the fan and a lot of people will suffer. All it's going to take is the right person (a white male, of course) coming to power with a certain kind of charisma and a lot of gumption, and hate. It will happen eventually. I don't think I'm being too far fetched.

These are also people who want to ADORE a strong authority figure that reminds them of DADDY. IMO, many of them are not emotionally strong nor verbally astute.

When you challenge a right winger, as I have often, they either shut-down on you or start spouting right wing talking points.

Stand up to them - do not fear them. They are like "the borg" in that, when they are not in large groups, their courage easily wanes. :thumbsup:

Part of what seems most offensive about these protest signs are -- aside from the racist element -- that they are so personal against Obama rather than issues they disagree with.

But, I stumbled upon an essay (I don't know the author or anything about this site) that shows that the left made it personal against Bush, too. Link below with images.

The huge difference now seems to be:

1) Republican "leadership" has legitimized such protest signs, slogans, disrespect and hatred in general; they certainly haven't condemned it.

2) Whereas the media denigrates all progressive/liberal protests and mock them, they seem to be going out of their way to make the crazies seem legitimate.

There's inappropriateness, to say the least, on both sides, but how the protests and even threats are perceived seem to be vastly different. Since Fox is, much to our dismay, part of the mainstream media now, and they have not only legitimized crazy but actively created and supported it, it's as though the other media are following suit.

The left never has never had such a media base. So much for the friggin liberal media.
