CBS Documents - Another Republican Lawyer Exposed
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 01:42 PM by phish420
Isn't this how we began the debunking of the Swift Boat Vets For Lies?

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/09/06/politics/main641481.shtml

(CBS/AP) An Internet writer considered the first to accuse CBS News of using fake documents in its report on President Bush's National Guard service is an Atlanta lawyer with strong ties to Republican causes, a newspaper reported Saturday.

Harry W. MacDougald, 46, is affiliated with two prominent conservative legal groups and helped draft a petition urging the Arkansas Supreme Court to disbar President Clinton for giving misleading testimony in the Paula Jones sexual harassment case, the Los Angeles Times said.

He confirmed his identify as the writer behind the Web posting, but declined to answer questions about his political background or explain how he knew so much about the documents so quickly, the newspaper said.

<snip>

In 1998, he helped draft the foundation's petition that led to the five-year suspension of Mr. Clinton's Arkansas law license. He also assisted in the group's legal challenge to a federal campaign finance law funded in conjunction with a Republican senator and handled by former Clinton investigator Kenneth W. Starr.

3. CBS has to stay on top of this
It would be nice, finally, for a mainstream news organization to expose the vast right-wing conspiracy for what it is. I hope CBS has the cojones to do that.

11. yes, but what would make it nice...
like I said before in another thread, if someone could figure out how to take all those email addresses in the 'National Media List' thread, and make a .csv file for someone to import all those emails into their outlook, then we could all EASILY mass email these media whores.

4. Is he related to this MacDouald?........
The president was supposed to headline a $25,000 per person fundraiser for the Florida GOP at the home of developer Jim MacDougald, founder and former head of ABR Information Services. Instead, Bush will visit the Ivan-socked Panhandle today and is expected back in the Tampa Bay area as early as next week.

18. I don't know if they're related, but here's a bit more on the Florida
MacDougald.

http://www.datag.com/company/adv_macdougald.asp

<<Board of Advisors (Data-Glyphics, est. 1998)

James E. MacDougald
Jim MacDougald is the former Chairman, President and CEO of ABR Information Services Inc., which he and wife Suzanne founded in 1982. ABR became a public company in 1984 and was sold to Ceridian Corp. in 1999.

During his tenure as CEO, ABR was named "One of the Best 200 Small Companies in America" by Forbes Magazine three years in a row as well as "One of the 100 Fastest Growing Public Companies in America" in 1998 by Fortune Magazine. He also serves as President of Westshore Ventures Inc., a St. Petersburg-based investment company, and is a partner in Shore Harbor Properties, LLC., a builder of custom homes in St. Petersburg.

Mr. MacDougald is a Trustee of the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, Eckerd College, the Salvador Dali Museum, The Rays of Hope Foundation, and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.>>

I wonder what the "Special Operations Warrior Foundation" is all about.

I suppose there's no use pursuing this, though, until/unless we can establish a link to Harry...

30. Harry MacDougald is on Fulton County Elections Board
and supports touchscreen voting.

Posted on another thread (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x835262#836500) by DoYouEverWonder:

http://valhalla.iscg.net/news/item.php?keyid=7825&page=1&category=23&scategory=0
In October, the Fulton County Elections Board sent Cox a letter that asked pointed questions about the security of Georgia´s voting machines. The state´s largest county uses 2,975 machines. Harry MacDougald, a Republican board member, wrote the letter after hearing about Rubin´s report.

Cox wrote a six-page response explaining the procedures in place to ensure the machines cannot be manipulated.

The Fulton board replied Dec. 1, telling Cox she had alleviated members´ concerns.

"I feel reasonably comfortable," MacDougald said recently. "There´s always a theoretical possibility . That can never be excluded, regardless of the voting technology. But the measures that were previously in place, with the new measures and technical fixes that are being made, bring the issue within a reasonable degree of security."

Bush is having trouble with this- certainly on the defensive- while the charges against Kerry are 100% neutralized.

26. But most of their exposure came w/ the aid of cable news...
...now any news is about Bush, not Kerry.

The anti-Bush 527s continue on as well- so the SBVs are essentially neutralized.

You mean to tell me that the guy who first accused CBS of showing fake documents was a REPUBLICAN! And even worse, he was a Republican LAWYER! – Holy cow, now I am convinced the documents are real.

And you say you found this story on a CBS website?

21. MacDougald isn't just any Repug Lawyer
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 05:15 PM by DoYouEverWonder
He is also among other things a raving freeper, with connections to Ken Starr.

He is also a member of the Fulton County Board of Elections. So we might have just a wee bit of a conflict of interest here. And he is well connected to other right wing extremists in the Republican party and media.

23. Frank B. Strickland
MacDougald and Strickland are the only 2 Republican members on the Fulton County Board of Elections, among a total of 5. MacDougald is on the Advisory Board of the Atlanta Lawyer's Chapter of the Federalist Society, of which Strickland is Chairman. Strickland is a major GOP player, having represented Gingrich and also having served as General Counsel for the Republican Party in Georgia. Strickland was appointed by George Bush himself, with Senate confirmation to the Legal Services Corporation, of which he is now the National Chairman.

28. MacDougald isn't just any old Republican lawyer.
He's a well-connected insider with ties to Rove. See the thread below:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=834113

It doesn't seem at all odd to you that MacDougald was on FR calling the memos forgeries within an hour of their appearing online? Or that all of his talking points (proportional fonts, TNR, MS Word alignment) were subsequent GOP talking points in the media, again, within hours of his posting?

19. Predictibly, the LA Times broke the story and only Keith Olbermann
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 05:03 PM by scmirage
have commented on it. Here's the addy to his blog on the subject:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5660340/

Some highlights:

The L.A. Times connected the rest of the dots, and would that they drew a nice easy-to-digest picture of some lawyer/computer geek, or lawyer/typewriter fancier, or any of the other healthy fanatics the blogosphere has produced. Nope. This one's a Conservative activist with a connection to Ken Starr. Harry W. MacDougald, of Atlanta, the law firm of Womble Carlyle Sandridge & Rice, the Federalist Society, and the Southeastern Legal Foundation, admitted he is "Buckhead" when the Times found him Friday, but would say nothing else. "You can ask the questions but I'm not going to answer them." So, we'll ask anyway. There sure are a lot to ask. They're mostly about that Southeastern Legal Foundation. It was the group that petitioned the Arkansas bar to revoke, or suspend, President Clinton's license to practice law, based on his false testimony in the Paula Jones case. Buckhead MacDougald was one of the lawyers who drew up the petition. So maybe he's an activist lawyer with a font fetish. So what? Except that Buckhead MacDougald also worked with the SLF's legal challenge against the campaign finance law we now call McCain-Feingold. Went all the way to the Supreme Court, that one did, underwritten by the Southeastern Legal Foundation, and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, and handled up the legal chain by an attorney named Kenneth Starr. I'm remembering the name. I'm having trouble placing the face.

Let me interject here for a minute--During the Clinton thing, when KO was on MSNBC the first time around, he said that Starr reminded him of Himmler or Goring and ended up having to apologize on-air.

Within four hours of CBS broadcasting the dubious paperwork, this man (had). . a complete mechanical and historical breakdown of the history of the font type, the IBM Selectric typewriter, the capacity of Microsoft Windows to produce such documents, and a call to arms for all other bloggers rightly suspicious of the Killian Memos. . . .
At about the same time, Democratic chairman Terry McAuliffe speculated on the same possibility, and even fingered Karl Rove, who has in the past been suspected of tapping his own candidate's phone, and dropping off his own candidate's debate practice tape, to make himself and his team look like injured parties.

Anyway, you can read the rest at the link above and you might want to drop KO a thank-you for being one of the few people to go any further with this story from the LA Times which connects Buckhead and Rove.
